apologies for the stupid question in advance.

i have an old fridge (washing machine sized) that i need to dispose of safely.

the problem is that i think it has asbestos and also do not have a car to transport it myself either.

i contacted wiltshire council about it but they put me through to health and safety who didn't want to do anything themselves but just said to look online for a company who disposes of asbestos etc.

just wondering what you might recommend?

thanks in axvance 👍

How old is this fridge that you think it contains asbestos?

Surely you drive to your nearest secluded beauty spot and hoof it out into the road?

Ah, no car, fit wheels and tow it?

there is an orange fibrous material behind the plastic inside the door that i think is asbestos. akso read that old fridges used to have asbestos as an insulating layer or something (this fridge is an ancient fridgidare that must be 25 plus years old at least).

Contact your local authority waste handling centre, look on the councils website.

So it's from the 1990's?

I doubt anyone was still using asbestos in domestic appliances then.

You really need to know for sure if it has asbestos. If it doesn't then I just phone council and they come and collect where I live (£15 for one item, £5 extra for each additional item so usually get rid a of few large things at same time)

I'd leave it on my drive, it would be gone by the next day.

Always folk driving round picking up scrap metal.

you can probably book an online collection with your local council..and don't mention the "asbestos"?

As above, a kindly gentleman was just driving past, knocked on my door and asked if I wanted my fridge removed. I replied yes. He said his name was Davies and did I have any other goods i needed removing. I replied no. he tipped his cap to me and carried on his merry way. What nice guy.

I suspect my fridge is now located in a hedge somewhere....

I left one out the front of our drive to see if it would magicaly vanish.
No not a chance.
I even asked a couple of passing lucky heather/clothes peg salesmen if they wanted it and was turned down on the offer.

They don't.

I took a freezer to the local waste recycling centre on Saturday and the council bloke helped me lift it out of the car and sit it next to all the other fridges that people had disposed of for free.

As above, mid-1990s very unlikely to be asbestos insulation. By then it was very specific applications in indutry that is could be used for and only white asbestos. Probably glass insulation. But a test at a lab can be arranged by post if you're comfortable taking a small sample and posting it off (ARCA and UKAS will have details of labs).

Very much depends on your local authority. Ours, (Cheshire West) is still free for householders

There are rules with fridge's about removal and recovery of the gas so no one will collect for free as the value of the metals is far below the cost of dealing with the gas, and commercial is always charged.

OP, you need to ask a mate with a car. A washing machine size one will go in a smallish hatchback with the seats down and they're not heavy.

I seriously doubt a fridge from 1995 would have asbestos in it, legislation was passed long before then. Orange fibre is some sort of rock wool.

They don’t.

Ah but we live in the socialist north.

I took a freezer to the local waste recycling centre on Saturday and the council bloke helped me I simply had to lift it out of the car and sit it next to all the other fridges that people had disposed of for free. I also got another re-injury of ‘sporting’ hernia and hence another 6 months off MTBing for free.

^This

The neighbours have the same Council recycling facility yet chose instead to dump theirs in the (communal) garden, where it’s been stood for the last 3 years.

So there are options...

Tip in Leeds doesn't charge, but we have some fellas driving round picking up scrap metal so they can weight it in a good couple of times a week.

I left a dishwasher in the garden one day as I was fixing something and needed it out if the way. Got home from work and it was gone!

If the OP wants nice and official just ring council and book a slot to get it collected. If it costs a tenner, so be it. Just don't mention asbestos....
