Can you recommend a good single malt to buy a mate for xmas. Say up to £40.

Not sure what 'type' he likes, but just anything you've had recently that you thought was decent?

Ta.

Are they a (keen) whisky drinker?

If they are I'd suggest looking for something else given budget and not knowing what they like.
If they're an "occasional tippler" you could do a lot worse than one of the various deals on amazon. They had Bunnahabhain, Bowmore, glenlivet and arbelour all at under 30 and they're all perfectly drinkable.

As a general sits on the shelf, very drinkable and unlikely to offend I'd go for glenfarclas personally.
Most of the classics are a good bet, cragganmore probably safest.

Personally I adore The Glenlivit 15.
That said I'd rather have two bottles of Jameson so take what I say with a pinch of salt perhaps.
The Jameson Reserve they used to sell only in duty free shops was my absolutely sweet spot cost per taste.

If you're not sure what he likes then find out first, otherwise it's a pointless question. If you just want a random bargain, you'll find an answer here several times over:
