I’d like an iPad.

I’d like a brand new Air but I don’t want to pay £600.

In real life day to day use how does the current standard iPad compare or even last gen (6th I think?)

I’m looking at WiFi & cellular.

Thanks 👍

Consider if you need cellular if you have a decent limit on your phone, the tethering is good for apple devices and will save two lots of line rental.

I have a previous gen iPad Pro and bought someone the current iPad (32GB, WiFi, £349 version) and I'm hard pressed to see much difference in speed of stuff for what I do (mostly web browsing and not-particularly-resource-intensive games). The screen is noticeably worse in terms of it's almost like another layer between your finger and screen and it's not quite as responsive which is a bit odd when switching between them but I don't think I'd notice even this if I wasn't going from one to the other.

I'd echo the comment above about thinking hard whether you need cellular - I've never missed it in all the years I've owned iPads (but obviously in some use cases it's very much worth it).

I thought I had a 2GB limit on tethering but you've just prompted me to check and actually it's unlimited (I think the 2gb limit is just when abroad?)

Depends on what you want it for really. I just bought a 6th Gen one for general use (€350). ahve a look at what the differences are Gen to Gen. I think the main diff with the latest Gen is Pen support and size.

I also bought a secondhand 4th Gen one (€100) to leave in the shed to use to run Sufferfest with the Smart trainer. It's more than up to the job.

Current Air is £479 and starts at 64GB storage which is a good amount to start with. Nice laminated glass display that looks way better. It's also blazing fast (A12 processor) so will be supported with new OS versions for ages.

As said, assuming you've got an iPhone then tethering is easy and seamless. Even if you run an Android phone it's pretty straightforward.

Basic iPad is still good though, more than quick enough for most tasks (I'm still using an old Air 2 where you only notice slow "thinking" times for AI players in board games, the basic iPad now is way faster), supports the pencil and keyboard now too. Trouble is that 32GB is tight unless you're really just living in the cloud and the next storage option is 128GB at £449.

The other option at around this money is the previous generation iPad Pro (10.5" display) - they're in the offical refurb store at £449. Only slightly slower than the current Air, but the really nice display with ProMotion, etc and the 4 speakers. It's probably where I'd put my money today.

The speakers and promotion in the (old) pro are amazing.
I have the bigger version that I picked up as refurb.

I stream TV/Movies straight from an SE to an iPad using a hotspot with no issues at all.

Do this quite a bit if I’m away in the van overnight.

Tempted to just go with a 6th Gen poverty one but not sure if I'll be disappointed with the screen.

The Air and Pro screens do look like they are much better.

Or an Air from music magpie eBay shop. 64gig WiFi for £350 “refurbished” after 15% off with 12 month warranty.

So the Air from music magpie is on the way 🙂

When I turn it on and put in my Apple account will it restore from my phone backup and set itself up as a “copy” of the phone?
