To replace an aging Air 3rd gen.

Considering either a new A16 basic one or an Apple refurbished M2 Air. It’s *only* about £60 more for the Air.

Mostly for basic browsing, watching the odd video and for a couple of navigation apps which I don’t think are that demanding but a bit clunky on my current one.

 Cheers

For similar use we bought a oneplus pad 3 as I couldn't justify the apple tax. It's great, does everything we need.

Confused - these seem to be more expensive than standard iPads with equivalent storage.

For the stated required the basic model iPad will be fine and, in this age of streaming, I cannot see any need to go for any larger storage than the standard 128GB

Not what you’re looking for but might be worth looking at the new Apple Neo laptop.

We bought a current gen basic iPad and it's perfect for what you describe. Saying that, so were the previous model that the kids still have! No need to pay more imo.

I'm still on an 11" iPad pro from 2019. I keep ogling replacements, but it does everything as sprightly as when I got it. The battery runs down a bit quicker, but I'm never far from a usb c cable, so it doesn't really matter.

When (if) it does die, I'm going to be looking hard at the minis, because I don't need anything as big as it is for what I use it for and I prefer the smaller size in most things.

I previously had more expensive models, like the Air. But the current standard, basic iPad is so good, I’ve never wanted for anything extra. I just bought the one with more memory, so I don’t have to worry aborning out of space.

Now the basic A16 is 128 Gb is 128Gb there is little reason to spend more

However lighter would also be nice

I’m seriously considering the M2 in the refurb shop as it can support an external monitor which means it can become my only device as I can connect a proper keyboard and use it as a desktop too

I am well down the Apple rabbit hole already...

I've got a perfectly excellent M1 Macbook Air 🙂

I like the Minis but phones are so good these days that I want a bigger screen, otherwise I'll just use the phone.

I think my Air 3 is an A12? As long as the A16 makes a decent step up in performance / longevity then I think it'll be fine.

I don't need that at the moment as I've got other desktop options.

Does the A16 have stage manager & it works well on it? My current one struggles to have 2 things open side by side.

I had a 11” pro that I sold and got a 13” M3 Air as I use it to watch streaming services and wanted the bigger screen and didn’t want to pay for a 13” pro. The screen was better on the pro and I do miss the facial recognition but I’m happy with my Air. I use it that much that I sold my M4 MacBook Air as it was just sitting there collecting dust. If I have to do any lengthy typing I use a small Logitech Keys-2-Go 2 keyboard.

I’ve had a couple of Apple refurbished products over the years and have always been happy with them.

I’ve been very happy with my 2020 iPad Pro and would happily buy another - might even stretch to the 13” to go with my 15” MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Air.

The most basic one would fulfil your requirements.

iPad Mini and a new bluetooth keyboard case makes this the smallest laptop surrogate I’ve ever had. You may need varifocals and small fingers, but I’ve been very pleased with mine. I use a vey old original iPad 2 or 3 for Zwift only duties and that works fine - wont run lots of newer apps though.

ditto, I went for the 13 to get a bigger screen for Zwifting. Had it for a couple of years now and use it all the time, great kit, very pricey though.

Can't advise on which model (mine is a gen 4 air).

Mini- K has a recent mini and has had two before that.  I can't see the point - too close to a phone, if I'm going to have a bigger screen the standard iPad size feels like it's worth it.

Android tablet.  We've a wall mounted tablet that does home automation stuff.  Had always been a 'retired' iPad before (and a mini perfect size here) but when the one we were using got too slow last year (had been on the wall 10 years and would have been a few years old then) tried an Android.  Admittedly it was low end - Galaxy Tab A9 - but it was a current model and well reviewed. The low screen resolution and speed (it's really not much better than the ancient iPad, but at least it has current version apps) would be addressed by a 'better' android tablet. But theres an awful lot of adjustment switching between android and iOS and pretty poor interoperability (Airplay doesn't work, moving files/images/even just text needs a different approach if you're used to Apple)

I bought the cheapest one having read a few reviews. My wife has an air that's a couple of years old and she really likes it. Apart from the lack of Face-ID, I couldn't see the point of spending any more. Mine is used for browsing and a bit of email mostly (we take them on hols as old eyes prefer the bigger screen to the phone when using maps etc). I also use it to watch YT when I'm on the treadmill with my (very) old macbook air running Zwift next to it. Also cast to TV using airplay.

Just works brilliantly. Good battery life, decent screen, be nice if it were a bit lighter but for the price (and yeah there is apple tax) it is ideal. Had the Neo been out tho, I might have gone with one of those as I still like a decent keyboard.  What's the best non apple solution to that?

Iirc the OnePlus was cheaper than the largest screen iPad, we wanted the largest screen as it doubles as our tv.

I'm a tart, and use it hours a day for work, so have a Pro, but I always assumed that the Air would be the best option if I couldn't justify it. I did watch this video recently that gave an impassioned reasoning as to why the Air was a very poor choice (2 mins into video);

I got my 13” ipad pro from John Pye auctions. Was about £600 cheaper than rrp. Worth a browse. I know some people are all “oh i bought a broken thing..” , but nothing I’ve bought has been like that*. Just gotta be careful

*dishwasher, Fox forks, ipad, laptop, massage gun..etc.

Cheers, some stuff to think about.

I might go and have a play in the shop before I finally decide.

I've been looking at replacing my ancient mini with something newer and faster/supported but am super tempted by a Neo.  Some thinking required

Even the most basic ipad can run an external monitor. I didn’t know this and nearly died of excitement when i plugged it into my work dick to charge it.  Resolution etc. goes up with posher ipads

I don’t realise that. I though it only worked with m series chipped iPads.

A bit of googling has found the display output difference. This is for usb C ipads

A series can out put at 4k buys its screen mirroring only

M series are higher resolution and allow extending the display
