My current speaker is giving up the ghost. I'm after something smallish (no bigger than a can of coke, preferably smaller), good battery life, robust (no need to be waterproof but should be able to take a few knocks) mini USB charging and nice depth of sound.

Budget around £50, I know I am not going to get brain melting sound quality for that but any recommendations?

Ta

It's not coke can shaped, but the Anker A7908 (I think that's the number) is a great speaker and can be had on Amazon for about £25.

One of these here - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B016MO90GW

no bigger than a Coke can and sounds decent to my ears, incredible battery life and has put up with me so far, seems robust enough - not convinced you'll get much better if you pay more

If you want to spend even less at around £5-15 then Technika from Tesco's own brands do good kit for the money.

I now have a Bose and although yes it's goldenly good, I would have a technika anyday again due to durability and longevity of a single charge.

The Bose cost me £179 iirc with cover which imo is bit keen, still cheaper at the tume than a beats crappymcdappy at £310! :O

flip 2 are great, but about £70 for a discoutned one now.

Have also recently got a TDK one that is surprisingly good.

more the size of an insulated coffee mug than a coke can though.,

Logitech Mini Boom 🙂
Had mine for years and everyone who hears it is pleasantly surprised.
However, might try this next time:

I got one of these recently to take on holiday and it is excellent. Nice rich sound for the size (it is very slightly bigger than a coke can but smaller than a Sky remote) with noticeable bass, it's splashproof, and I charged it a grand total of once over the course of 2 weeks. Probably 14 hours music from one charge I reckon.

Heard quite a few; the JBL Flip 3 is my favourite by some margin. Water-resistant, tough outer casing, 'coke-can shaped', great battery life, great sound for such a tiny speaker, and available in a range of colours. Available for around £70 if you catch the good deals. Sub £50 speakers are generally a bit shit ime.

I really rate my JBL Flip 2, try the JBL website, I bought mine on there and managed to get cashback on it too, can't remember how much now but thought it was very reasonable

Also comes with a zip up semi rigid case that is great for sticking in a bag so you can take it with you

More like a 500ml can size though, rather than a 330ml can size

But it's impressively loud for something of that size

I got an anker one from a thread on here about 18 months ago. It's brilliant, goes everywhere with me, sounds great (not "for the size" - actually great) and is powerful enough to use as a stereo in the garden when I have people round, or powerful enough to mean everyone for houses around knows how much the kids like Ice Ice Baby 🙄
The charge really does seem to last the claimed twenty hours too, I just give it a quick top up every now and then. Bonus being it has the same charge cable as my phone so I only need carry one (stw-approved jiayu S3, also same as my old HTC and the partner's Samsung)
Anything I can carry around for that long without destroying is made of stern stuff, if mine ever breaks I'll just buy another rather than look at an upgrade.
