Jailbreak lets your run background apps?
Yep. Jailbreak then install the "Backgrounder" app from Cydia.
When exiting an app you can hold the Home button (instead of just pressing it) and the app will continue to run in the background.
Doodlejump! I love it. 😀
Got the new Civilisation game on my phone last night. It is mind-crack.
Fired it up to see what it was like and an hour and a half later realised that I really should stop playing it. Hideously addictive.
Background apps are the single thing that is most needed on the iPhone. Having Skype being enabled _only_ when you start it is a great nuisance.

Not jailbroken here, mainly because I can't see any compelling reason to do so.
What changed your mind?
Marmite: yeah, when someone mentioned the Cycorder app (which adds video recording to the iPhone 3G) and the SBSettings app I decided that was probably a "compelling reason".*
Plus I was spurred on by Apple claiming that anyone Jailbreaking is probably a drug-dealer or a terrorist. 🙄
* proof that I do sometimes change my mind following a STW debate
You've had no problems then, all ok?
Still haven't done it myself, though that SBS settings does look handy, even purely for turning bluetooth on and off as the standard settings is a faff all of the time.
Apple can tell if your phone is jailbroken, when you hook it up to iTunes. They are not blocking Jailbroken iPhones yet, the threat is there, but doubt they will act on it.

How do you know this? Concerned if true.
Marmite: yep, all fine so far. I used redsn0w 0.8 to jailbreak my phone (3G with 3.01 firmware), roughly following this guide:
http://www.hackthatphone.com/3x/r_3_0_1_3g.html
but ignoring the Macisms and doing it on Windows instead.
I've got Cycorder, SBSettings and Backgrounder installed.
All of which work fine.
Apple can tell if your phone is jailbroken
Apple have a "killswitch" in the firmware that they could potentially use to block/erase certain apps. The SBSettings app lets you disable the kill switch 🙂
Get the covers from the o2 shop 3 for £9 approx.
Friend has his phone Jailbroken and the most interesting part of Cydia that I saw was that O2 advertise in it!!!
Jailbreaking is bad yet the exclusive UK network is touting for business in the jailbroken phone app store!!
Brilliant!

It's not the same article I read, which gave actual figures of the amount of jailbroken iPhones from Apple. Basically when you connect to the itunes server it knows if it has been jailbroken or not.. But that article doesnt say anything about that.
I I expect I will jailbreak my iPhone, next year when the warranty runs out.. If I can!
does jail breaking mean you cant run sw updates, like when os3 came out - could jailbroken phones be updated?
Milkie: those are unlocked, not jailbroken phones.
Unlocking is an additional thing that you can optionally do to a jailbroken iphone to allow it to run on other networks.
cp: no, you can still update, but you have to wait for the jailbreak tools to catch up when new SW is released. Alternatively you can always just "unjailbreak" by going back to the standard firmware.
Doh!!! Small, but big difference! 🙄
charlie brookers sugestions......
I'm unmoved in the face of friends screaming at me to join the iPhone cult. It's horrible. Here are a few iPhone apps I'd like to see:
1. An app that makes the iPhone scream 'I'VE GOT AN IPHONE!' each time the user pulls it out of their pocket. Once activated, it would be impossible to switch off. The only way to stop the constant embarrassment would be to repeatedly crack the device against a wall, or preferably your own face, until it shattered.
2. An app billed as a "comical toilet paper simulator". You switch it on, pretend to "wipe" your backside, and hey presto: the screen appears smeared with virtual pixilated poo. But – ho ho – just like the screaming iPhone app above, it's a permanent booby trap. Once you've performed your first comical wipe, in a frankly desperate bid to impress your non-iPhone-owning friends, it's impossible for the screen to revert to its original state. Instead, you're left with no option but to go home and cry.
3. An app that makes your iPhone unexpectedly oscillate and explode halfway through a conversation to a loved one, sending thousands of miniscule shards of plastic and silicon hurtling into your ear canal like a swarm of angry pins. As a bonus, the detonation also blasts your hand apart like a spent casing. Why? Because you bought an iPhone, silly.
Must admit i'll be looking closely at what state Android phones are in when my contract is up, though by then a new iphone will be out and I may change my mind...
so... how do you unlock it without 'breaking it?

so... how do you unlock it without 'breaking it?
You can't.
You have to jailbreak it to allow you to unlock it.
But you only need to unlock it if you want to use it on some other network.
Played Civilisation Revolution last night and lost several hours of my life.
Recommended if you like turn-based strategy type games.
Just following on about the GPS and battery life, I used trailguru for 3hrs from fully charged and the 20% battery warning appeared at 3hrs almost on the dot. Accuracy seemed pretty good all the way round though it was a road ride meaning less riding under trees than might otherwise be the case. (3GS)
If you like Chess, "Chess with Friends" is great - you can play someone you know or it can select a random opponent for you - it can then email you when a move's ready for you.
As suggested by 'RobGray' above...I bought 'Need For Speed Undercover' (£3.99) and it's kept me entertained over a long weekend. It's looks (and plays) great. (More like a PSP looking game rather than a regular mobile game)
If you're using a 3G phone with GPS a lot, then a Mophie battery pack helps a great deal, doubling the use of the phone. I use Tune.it iCarRadio to listen to 6Music over the normal network, not 3g, and that really drains the battery. The Mophie allows me to have four hours of Cerys Matthews and still get a whole day out of my phone, which includes a fair amount of doing this via wifi, which I don't think is too shabby. A 3Gs obviously has better battery management so may not need a Mophie, but there again, extra battery life never hurts. 😀
