For me it's this.

Eye to eye stand winners and losers

Hurt by envy, cut by greed

Catchy synth driven melodies, Euro accent and a very indulgent video.
(Edit^ that was bit self indulgent too!!)

Town Called Malice - if you want mainstream

Lots of others though...

I never bought into this 80s greed and tacky music nonsense that the media use to stereotype the whole decade.

80s were all about anger, bitterness, ****tting about with your mates, despair... and there was a whole stack of good music

Depends what you think the "80's" were all about, doesn't it?

Personally, I think it was all about me...

Not necessarily my favourite, in fact far from it, but Radio Ga Ga by Queen would get my vote

Hmmmmm, as I see it the 80's were divided into three seperate and quite different times. There was the dark early 80's of Thatcher's recession, best summed up by this gem

That's how I saw it anyhow.

Then there was the really tacky, greedy, self indulgent, money making bit in the middle, where good taste evaporated into the ether leaving us with mullet powered hideousness like this. - Warning, it's bad.

This bit only happened in London, SE England and the Media

As the replies clearly show. There was just one song to define the 80s!

....and the Winner is;

Derek_Starship with Kraftwerk - The Model

Superb piece of music - released in UK in 1981. I remember spending hours listening to the album "Man-Machine" in my mates bedroom when I was about 14.

Still my fave 😆

First year at University, 1987. The album was the soundtrack to the start of the best 3 years of my life. Not sure what the single track to epitomise the feeling was, but given the quality of this video is better than the ones I can find for 'A Million Miles' it'll have to be

If I remember right, "The Model" was originally released in 1978 as a b side to "The Robots". Anyway, it's on the album "Man Machine" which makes it 70s not 80s. 😉

Holiday in Cambodia- Dead Kennedys

'79 IIRC

for every Heart, Wham or Pet Shop Boys, there was a New Model Army, Sisters Of Mercy, The Cult. So not all bad 😉
But The Clash had moved on my then, IMO - their best stuff was up to & including London Calling, in '79

Ah, Holiday in Cambodia was released in 1980 John Drummer. I'm not a pedant, honest.

Totally agree with you about The Clash. They were great until the 80's, plus, the best album by a clear mile is 'Give em Enough Rope', even if the critics disagree.

😉

Love this thread! I have always maintained that I hated 80s music, but it's actually quite diverse and pretty awesome in places.

Reluctant - wasn't the 1978 release a German only thing. The release I refer to was the 1981 release as a B-side in the UK.

Jebus, Can't believe its got this far without mention, so given TJ's self imposed semi-exile, I'll throw this one down in his honour 😉

If you want a retort for that, it wasn't just Joe Dolce. John Lennon was #1 (with, uh, Imagine I think) for the first week it was at #2.
