Buy a great big old guitar or bass amp driver and salvage the magnet off the back of that maybe

Whatever you do, don't put it down on your steel work bench.

Stick some smaller magnets to the back of a mild steel plate.

It not the physical size of the magnet but the strength of the magnetic field. Neodymium magnets are crazy strong.

Permanet magnet or electromagnet?
.
Have you tried randomly wandering around a scrapyard? All kinds of wierd stuff in there, bound to be something with a big magnet in it.

slight sidetrack but does anyone know how they post those mega strong neodymium magnets?
i mean some of the ones i've seen have nearly half a tonne of pull, would it not just get stuck to the inside of the van?
is there some way of blocking their field?

Whatcha wanting to pick up with it? Any half-decent Chandlery will sell you a magnet big enough to pick up a substantial anchor from the sea-floor

My dad had a chunk of silly powerful magnet in his office when he worked in the college, stuck to a filing cabinet. People would wander in and go 'ooh look, a big magnet', go to pick it up, wrestle with it for a few minutes then give up ๐Ÿ™‚
