As per the ridiculously long title. Does anybody know where (or even if you can) buy a decent mattress without having to sell a limb, child or all your worldly belongings? Budget of around £250

Given the amount of time the average person spends in bed I'd have thought that cutting corners on a mattress is not the best idea.
That said the mattress we replaced last week cost about £1300 [12 years ago] but the one we replaced it with (Casper) was 'just' £580 and we get to try it for 100 days.
[edit: and it's really nice..... mattresses have come in the last 12 years!]
It's a good job mattresses are priced different depending on the size you're after.
We bought a Tempur mattress on 0% credit through their outlet shop in Bridgend.
Made a vastly expensive mattress affordable for us. Best nights sleep ever.

For the spare bed in my ouse, I didn't wanna spend loads - I went to one of those normal bed shops (Dreams, I think) and bought a standard memory foam thing for about £250. It was a bit smelly at first, (that chemical whiff) but it's fine.
I've slept in* it a few times and have nothing bad to report.

Thanks all. Trailwaggers looks ace! Do IKEA mattresses still come in their own whacky sizes or do they now do standard too? I know one shouldn’t scrimp when buying, but I don’t have the funds so corner cutting is the only viable option.

It was worth it.
You know that feeling when you go away and sleep in a hotel and have a really good nights sleep because the beds really comfortable? I now have the opposite problem.
Same here tinas, but mine was a stupid amount of money. I think I was ripped off really. But, man it's comfortable. (This is the one in my bed, not the spare)

Argos try for 100 days and if you don't like it you can change it. For a nominal fee they'll take the old one away.

I think you will find that 680 million other Europeans sleep on those "wacky sized" beds sold by Ikea. It is only our somewhat outdated country that still uses Imperial sizes, even 45 years after going metric!

IKEA, at least 2 of their mattress have best buy awards in Which magazine and both under £200 I think. I can look up the specific models if you wish but I think IKEA highlight the Which accolades on their website
We bought a John Lewis one ten years ago to replace an Ikea one we'd had for not many years which had deteriorated. Reasonably priced (£550 from memory) and when the time came to replace it again, we went back to JL.
We were talked up a few steps in the range so spent 50% or so more to a supposedly 'better quality' one, but it's never been as comfortable as the old, cheaper one (which they don't do any more). It needs to be turned religiously or it's straight into back pain territory. Some nights it's the comfiest thing you've ever slept on, other nights you wake with back pain. Really odd.
We tried Dreams etc and this was the comfiest, but it is still a bit of a lottery. Should say can't stand memory foam mattresses, so that limited our choice.
Have a look on Groupon , bought my last mattress of there for £299 . It had an rrp of £1600 I thought 'yeah right, load of bo****ks' but when I googled it there were a couple of online suppliers selling it at that price.

As Mr Nana said, they've won Which? Best-buy awards. I think that applies to the Hesseng, Hovag and Mordegal. We've got a Hovag (£180 for a double) in the spare room and lots of guests have commented favourably.

All you do is contact the company and tell them you want to return the mattress. They might ask why, but will sort it all out either over the phone or email, and send a courier

Tempur in a sale on 18 months interest free. Still costing me £70 a month, but with a knackered back its been worth it (broke my spine in a fight with an idiot driver whilst cycling to work. PS bike was fine).

We bought a King from there when we moved. I can't tell the difference between that and the Double it replaced (now in the spare room) which cost three times more. Quick delivery, good warranty and comfy.
we've just got a mattress topper from eve - mrsEd wasn't happy on the mattress we have (I was ok on it) and there was some discussion about whether a 5yo mattress is worn out or not so the topper compromise has worked so far

IKEA here. Really like it, super comfy and I'm a tall gimp who gets a bad back if I sleep in some beds for too long. Although I guess mattresses are a bit like saddles, what suits me may be horrible for you. FWIW I get on much better with a firm mattress, hate soft ones

Can't comment n ikea but will be in the market for one soon so will try it.
Last one I bought I had £800 of John Lewis vouchers and bought what was nearly their bottom of the range, but it has been ACE. Their range went on to £000's and I struggle to think how anything could be more comfy.
have a simba and a mid range Ikea I spent 9 months on (separate rooms so I could try to sleep with littleone#2). simba is nicer bit also twice the price.
