[#2492082]

Need some ideas for somewhere to eat out for father in laws 75th birthday.

Needs to keep him and MIL happy, as well as a 7 year old and a 4 year old, ideally serve lamb and/or seafood (his favourites) and not be too expensive or pretentious as they are not foodies

Will happily consider pub chains/beefeater type places if it fits the bill

Any suggestions guys?

Never had a problem with Morley Hayes or The Rose & Crown at Smalley. Both good for families. Depending on time of day etc, Queen's Head in Watnall does good food (bit biased as it's my local), not quite Derby but recommended.

Cheers spud, excellent choices but living in West Hallam we were wondering if there was anything further than spitting distance we might be missing!

Might check out your local though!

The Bear at Alderwasley is to be recommended

Although ask for a table in the actual pub, not the carvery as the ambience is much nicer.

Cheers STR, always wanted to try the Bear but wasn't sure how child friendly it was?

HH45 - think I know where you mean, was it attached to the hotel next to Virgin Active?

went down to the Bullshead at Repton for my dad's 70th a few weeks ago, and was very impressed. It was also pretty family friendly as a few of us have young kids. There were only a few families there, but I was quite impressed when one of the staff had a quiet word with one family, who seemed to feel it was OK to let their kids hair about.

Slightly OT, but as far as Brewery/chain type pubs go (and this is more of a Summer suggestion), the Clock Warehouse at Shardlow is quite a pleasant setting - not sure about the food though.

For a chain type (marstons) the greyhound at shirland gets nothing but high praise at the moment from anyone I speak to who's been, and is definately family friendly!!

New georges pub/resteraunt on the a610 Woodlinkin bypass

Went in about on a weeknight evening a few weeks back; there were only about six tables eating but it still took them well over an hour to get the food to our table, and our fish and chips arrived without any mushy peas!!!! Gave them a few minutes then asked where the peas were, and were told we have run out of mushy peas. When I asked if their plan had been to just not tell us and hope we wouldn't notice, I just got a blank stare in repy, no apology. I'll be sticking with the 'proper' one in belper, but they now give me funny looks when I take my own stella ๐Ÿ˜‰

if you fancy Greek then the best resaturant in the world (in my opinion) is Stelios and Saphinas on London Road in Derby
They will do a meat or fish mezze, but if you want certain fish things best to let Andreas know in advance.
The slow cooked lamb is also superb (Kleftiko)
Some of best Greek / Cypriot food Ive tasted (and we have spent a fair bit of time in Cyprus)

Pubs -
The Bubble at Stenson,
The Blue Bell at Langley Common (B5020 just off A52 at Mackworth)
The Mundy Arms, A52 Mackworth
The Dog Inn at Pentrich - and you have the opportunity to say the infamous line - we are all going Dog'inn ๐Ÿ™‚ is more upmarket
The pub on Main street in Tutbury is also reasonable

Curry (huge menu all sorts of spicy/non spicy, fish etc) - Melbourne Arms, Melbourne

Damons - mentioned above at the Cricket Ground in Derby is long gone into Administration (it was awful anyway)

We've been to the Bear with two babies no problems. Think it might be fine for kids as long as you're not wanting a special kids menu or anything like that.

Golden Pheasant in Shelton Lock, maaaaassive steaks for under a tenner, it's a hungry horse so all the portions are pretty big as well. ๐Ÿ˜€

Another +1 for The Bear. We've been taking our daughter there since she was a baby now 3, great carvery on Sundays and one of the few times she actually eats anything meaningful. Totally agree, that the main pub has nicer atmosphere and book well in advance.
