Got punched in the face while on a 3am wander through the streets while sleeping at a friends house early on in secondary school, got my head split open by a thrown stone a year or so later, and got punched in the face during a geography lesson at about the same time.

Somehow, despite going to a rough primary and secondary in a relatively rough part of the country, that's it. I don't think I've ever punched anyone.

it seems such a bizzare thing to do in the 21st century and a purely animal response that doesn’t have a place in modern society.

All well and good Mr Smith, until someone decides they are going to give you some brain damage because you weren't in the cycle lane or you looked at them funny or ....whatever. There are still rough places out there and plenty of people who will cause you harm and not think twice. Regardless of the year.

I used to work the doors on pubs and also did security for some strippers for a time, saw and took part in many a punch up in those days but been years since having to actually raise fists.

I don't see a place for it mostly and despite being quite a big lad would rather walk away and let people think they've won what ever victory they were after. It never seems to be a fair fight these days, always someone with a knife or a bat or a knuckle duster.

Depending on the definitions:
Handbags/pushing and shoving/verbals but no punches thrown - 4 or 5 years ago when playing Sunday league football, very regular indeed, like every 3 or 4 games.
Being punched - 20 years ago I reckon, Millennium nightclub in Dudley, I'd apparently took some money out of a girls bag the week before. The week after the same guy apologised to me for getting the wrong person.
Actually throwing a punch - School so 25 year ago, I bloodied his nose and refused to punch him again.

Been close to that with a lorry driver who tried to put me under his wheels while he was on the phone, he got out all in my face and was going to "kill me" the reason for his phone/driving use? " my uncle has just died"
I just said "that's terrible news but please don't add another death to your day" and walked off.

It helps if you don't put yourself in situations that look like they are going to kick off, I have a radar for that so have avoided a lot of conflict plus living with people prone to outbursts of rage I know how to not over react and diffuse the situation, that said if somebody wants to get all pugilistic there is not much you can do!

I used to be friends with a guy affectionally known as 'Alec the Viking' for obvious reasons. The one thing he hated about having such a huge frame was the amount of times people would come looking for a fight just to see how they would fare against this Man-Mountain.

My best mate has the same issue. If some cockwomble wants to have a pop at the biggest bloke in the pub, then its always him. He's 6'3' and built like a tank. He's also absolutely nails (life-long forces and done a few tours of Iraq and Afghan), and had a pretty successful boxing career at heavyweight. Ive seen him dish out some proper kickings. When he punches someone, they stay punched! 😯

One time we were out for a few beers in Warrington - we'd have been early 20's - and a gang of scotes jumped us. One of them had run up and smashed a bottle round my mates head, expecting him to go down. He barely flinched. You should have seen the lads face drop when he turned round, looking pretty bloody pissed off. He made a right mess of him! In the meantime about ten of his mates dived in. My mate was flooring people left right and centre. I on the other hand, being neither 6'3" or remotely nails got the shit kicked out of me! 🙁

I am MENTAL. You'd all best start showing some respect. This morning on the bus I flying-kicked some dude in the head and knocked him out. For nothing!
Truth up.

I was 6'3" and 15 stone by the time I was 13/14. You would think this would have meant few people wanting to fight me, but growing up in the rough part of a rough area the opposite was true. Every hardnut or wannabe hardnut from my area or any other area I happened to be in at the time from when I was 13/14 up until I was about 24 wanted a go, a square go or otherwise.

I just had that fighty look about me I guess, pubs, clubs, taxi ranks, train stations, chip shops, parties, even just walking down the street someone would start on me (why do they always need to be in a group?). I've even had people come to my door to see if I wanted to fight.

I got into that many fights at an early age I just got good at it through experience. You would then think this would have then put people off, but no, I just got a reputation as a good fighter instead. This just attracted more bampots.

Had my head kicked in and stamped in, been stabbed with a screwdriver in the shoulder, chased by a group with a machette and slashed down my arm (protecting my face), had a sword pulled out on me, been bottled, broken face, hands, ribs, foot/ankle you name it. Even got randomly stabbed by a couple of junkies one time who tried to mug me.

I don't do fights these days, wouldn't have done any when I was younger either but never had much of a choice. Oh, and the women who go for that kind of thing are ****ing mental. I learned that the hard way. Twice.

School was my last, culminating in me shaming my long term bully in front of his friends. He came back for revenge and I bounced him down the stairs and then I didn't have a bully anymore. I'd like to claim it was all planned, but I have an extremely long fuse before the red mist descends so badly I have no recollection of events. I've only lost it that badly twice in my entire life.

Shortly after I became an angry young man that resulted in me trading blows with my dad (unwarranted by him, inflamed by me) and me taking up Muay Thai to 'vent'.

This made me more aware of my capabilities, quelled the burning fires, and led me to understanding myself better.

Nowt since, because if you're aware enough, it's possible to nearly avoid all of it.

I should bloody well hope so too. At 43 I should be older and wiser. It would be an embarrassing loss of control of the situation. Same reason I don't get paralytic or monged anymore.

Jesus!

If you have in any way been affected by the issues raised in this thread, help is available.

Not if you're a ****ing nutter, though.

Nah that sounds like a perfect "prove yourself target". I cant say I understand why but I have seen it enough to understand the idea.

I like to think I am still in the Goldilocks zone (not sure if still the case). I am big and ugly enough that some pissed idiot simply wanting a fight will choose an easier target but not that high on the scale that another more switched on person will choose me to prove how capable they are to their mates.
With that last fight was more years than I care to remember doing door work at a pub (quietish pub with selected bar staff doing duty so not hardcore) and it wasnt exactly fair. They started escalating without thinking it through. Met them a week or so later and they brought a pint to apologise.
Out of the proper bouncers I knew the small people had lots of fights (with idiots who didnt realise that some small bod doing the door had to have to really proved themselves and often still felt they needed to) and then the really big blokes. Those in the middle tended to get left alone.

They must have wanted to apologise really badly if they brought a pint with them, what with all the chance to spill it on the way.

If on the other hand, they bought the pint, then that would be more usual.

Strangely enough, being a smartarse is what has brought me closest to a kicking over the years.

Sounds horribly familiar.

I was systematically bullied at high school for about three years. I never fought back because by some twisted schoolboy logic I didn't want to hurt anyone (laughable in itself, I was probably nine stone wet through). One lunchtime my aggressor started on me for another round, the exact circumstances elude me now but I was sat on the grass eating my sandwiches and minding my own business. Something inside me went "enough" and snapped, and I leathered the ****er. Life got a lot easier after that day.

Also oddly familiar. Having a battle of wits with unarmed men does tend rather to lead to a kicking.

Oxford with my housemates and my brother, about 7 years ago, without about 3 groups of 5 individuals each - so about 15 people in all in one night.

I've grown up since then.

OUTSIDE NOW!!!!
You do need to balance the level of being a smartarse. Go too high and it isnt noticed.

To my shame I was an utter arsehole in my teens. Angry for a multitude of reasons. This led to me picking on bullies, I basically became a bully beater. Got beaten up a few times as a result, so learned how to box and picked bits from various martial arts. Not to improve myself, just so I could even the odds in an altercation.

I think having an older brother to regularly trade blows with helped me learn to take a hit too. Anyway, long story short I got into a lot of fights in my teens and chilled out in my twenties. The last time I raised my fists in anger was when I was about thirty two.

On the way to a friends house I took a short cut through a park at night. In hindsight a stupid thing to do. Two guys tried to mug me. I just hit with elbows, fists, knees and stuck my fingers in to places that I knew would hurt. I ran when one of them went down and the other ran away,

Kept me awake for weeks afterwards as I think I may have really hurt one of them. I should have just handed my wallet over or ran away. I could have been stabbed or worse. Luckily torn clothing, a bust nose and lots of really painful bruises are all I got. I still regret that and my actions as a young man to this day. Fighting is really ****ing dumb

On the other hand, you might've made them think twice about their lifestyle choices. Could've saved the life of someone's grannie.

The last fisticuffs I engaged in was when I saw a chap beating someone else's dog with a golf club and, shamefully, lost my temper. Turns out he was an off-duty copper.. He could have got in a lot worse trouble than a savage beating if only I'd kept my cool and given the authorities the video my missus took. But being honest with myself I think if I saw the same thing happening tomorrow I'd still kick off.

Whilst walking my dog late one evening I intervened in a vicious assault where a semi conscious young lad was having his face repeatedly smashed into the road by a very muscular black fella (I mention his colour because it becomes a significant point).

I've boxed for 25 years and did what I thought best.. smacked the fella a couple of times. I couldnt risk him getting hold of me, he was twice my size.

End result was the young lad in hospital with a fractured skull and a face resembling a raspberry crumble.. no idea what happened to the black fella.. but the easiest collar for the police.. me! charged with GBH with racial intent.

Three months on bail before the CPS threw out the case. Needless to say, my opinion of the police severely depreciated. That was a couple of years ago.
