If a pie should have by definition a pastry top or bottom, what's the deal with Shepherd's pie and Cottage pie?

A pie is a self-supporting, pastry encased foodstuff

A little casserole dish with a puff-pastry lid is NOT a pie. Pubs around the country take note, when I am king of the world such abominations will be outlawed.

Last night I made salmon en croute.

Puff pastry, with a boneless piece of salmon fillet, topped with a little butter and a handful of currants inside. Served with a Marie Rose sauce they were excellent.

But not a pie.

The pasty and the pie are cosmic kin.

I must admit the disappointment when you a pub serves you a casserole with a pastry lid is sometimes a little hard to disguise.

Meat and Potato rules the roost here in Wigan. Never really been a fan. More a chunky steak fan myself.

I'll vote for that. I do like my pastry! 🙂

What's the difference between a tart, a flan, and a quiche then?

Real men don't eat quiche - they eat tarts.

You can have a quiche with a couple of tarts though.

How come in chippies you get Steak and Kidney pies in the midlands but up t north you get Steak and Kidney pudding and no body seems to know what a Saveloy is?

Also what s the difference between batches, barms and cobs?

And dont get me started on Jaffa Cakes!

A steak and kidney pudding is different to a pie in so much as its steamed rather than cooked conventionally, i've never had problems getting normal pies in chippys up here in the North, generations have been brung up on Hollands!

Just to clear up the jaffa cake nonsense so we can all get back to the pie...
a cake goes hard when left in the open..a biscuit goes soft
therefore jaffa cake is a cake - just a very small one.

now then, pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies pies ....

I like a balanced diet:
A pie in both hands.

Slightly alarmed that the soft pampered youth of today are rejecting the kidney element and choosing the Peppered Steak option, which frankly sounds a bit namby-pamby to me.

Has the world gone mad?
