I always prided myself in not being materialistic but in the last couple of years its been all about brands and pointless purchases - my latest list of wants:

an i-phone
a macbook
Warp Records box set (£100 for some cd's)
a motorbike
a swish car
new trainers
a £30 rucksack i don't need
and loads of other guff

now i'm not in a well paid job at the moment to be able to afford any of this - what the hell happened???

You realised what the hell does it matter if you chose to spend money.

Now imagine them all taken away - feel better or worse?

We need you too spend us out of recession, you're very public spirited and I admire you greatly.

Why does it matter, so long as you're still you and haven't changed into a materialistic moron with no value for other things. While monks may have the moral high ground, unless you want to devote yourself to a manmade construct and beat yourself up for wanting material items just go ahead and enjoy them. In fact, why even question it. Unless you're looking for attention? 😀
