Saw this today . It didn't touch the ground and disappeared soon after. One grey , one white. Definitely pointing down not parallel to the earth.

The white one looks a bit like a contrail, although I know you said it wasn't 'in orbit' but pointing downwards. The grey one doesn't look the same, granted.
On balance I'd agree with the idea of vortex/nascent mini tornado thingummy. Are there storms kicking off around your way?

I think it’s likely a contrail, coming directly overhead towards the horizon, it gives the impression it’s coming down vertically, an optical illusion, basically.
Oh, and the different colours are due to first having a clear blue sky behind, then passing in front of a band of white, higher clouds.

The white one was to the west and the grey one to the east.
Agree first one is a contrail with weird angle/optical illusion maybe with it descending confusing things. Got the two sides widening out from the plane.
The second its hard to tell anything from but probably aliens, sorry, contrails.
