Characters like Lizard Man, Barbarian, Knight, Hobbit (rubbish), Hobgoblin... you said an attack, they said an attack and you both turn to the cross referenced result? These were not story based books like Fighting Fantasy types but two player (two book needed) combats. Any idea?
Lost worlds?

This (before the battering). Thank you!
I thought these would make great Xmas presents for my kids but then saw the price on amazon!!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t fear David, you can pick up the proper hardback Collins dictionaries for under a tenner on eBay, should be just about right for a bit of Christmas child control...😉
Talking of Fighting Fantasy, there was a two player one. Two books. Got one right here 😁
Don't think it ever got played I was Billy No Mates with this stuff. Did do some D&D club thing but got banned for not taking it seriously.

There was a battletech series of those things as well, for people who liked big stompy robots but didn't want to play the bloody awful tabletop game
Dungeons & Dragons?
This was my favourite. Analogue dogfighting.
