[Closed] What warm, waterproof, grippy smart work shoes?

I'm going to be working quite a bit in Sweden over the winter and my current 'work' shoes are not really suitable - not waterproof and slidey soles.

I could go down the route of a 'walking to work' shoe and a 'work' shoe but that would mean packing twice as many shoes so I'm after something that can do both.

I'm out there next week anyway so I can always check out the shops and what my colleagues are wearing (trying not to come across as some sort of homo-shoe-fetishist!)

Get some nice Loakes or similar with commando soles.

Brasher Bosolis are reasonably smart and slightly "rugged."

I could say that I wouldn't be seen dead in those Brashers but that would be understating it quite a bit 8)

Might be worth looking at Timberland as they do normal looking shoes (e.g. "City Adventure Auburndale Plain Toe Oxford" on their website) with a grippier sole. I used to have a similar pair and I don't recall them ever leaking.

I've also had shoes from Barbour that were good in nasty weather.

I'm probably going to get shot down in flames for this...

What about good old (okay, maybe not as original as the proper 'old' ones were...) DM's? I'm on my feet all day and can't fault them for being sturdy, comfortable - waterproof integrity not tested yet as I've not had a Craft & Design lesson go that wrong!

+1 for Timberlands, don't know if it is going to be that cold if they need to look that normal though. I'd prefer function over fashion.

My feet have started cutting themselves off at the merest thought of those Brashers.

Loake Kemptons, 1/2 a size too big and decent socks.

Why have DMs become so expensive?

I remember wearing them years ago because they were functional good value shoes.

Nowadays their prices are just daft 😕

The situation with DMs is that the mainstream line are manufactured in Vietnam/Thailand now and have been for a few years. The consensus is that quality has deteriorated significantly.

Conversely, they now have a spin-off 'Made in England' line that are a fair bit more expensive than the regular ones. On the plus side they are even better than the old pre-SE Asia DMs.

I saw a pretty hot girl in short black skirt, black tights and 8-hole black DMs the other day. She looked cuter than a cute thing. Brought back student days memories. The girls wore eights and the boys wore tens 🙂

My DM wearing days were between 88 and 93 tbh. Haven't owned a pair since. A few pairs of ten holes, shoes, a few pairs of bubble toed jobbies (to my shame, ah heck, they were all the rage 😳 ).

But makes me wonder now...what was the tipping point for DMs? Who wore them originally? I'm right in thinking they were a utilitarian work boot yes? They weren't an army thing were they? Was it punks, skinheads, some other tribe that took them on as fashion?

I bought some of those brashers for walking the dog in and they are so comfy I wear them all the time. Cracking shoes. C*ckmunchers. 😉

Definitely utilitarian in origin.

Police officers, railway workers and postmen seemed to be the early adopters. Punks, mods and skins made them their own at various points along with indie rockers and then along came grunge/riot grrrl (during your DM era).

Fashion is nothing if not cyclical.

Is that your nickname for your Brashers Torminalis? My dog* said he wouldn't come to the park with me if I was going to wear Brashers. 😛

* dog is purely a figment of my imagination for the purposes of making cheap jibes at the shoe choices of others

Rockport do great shoes and boots. Look like city shoes, but feel like trainers. I got goretex lined waterproof boots for £70 from Jones. The soles are grippy on pavement but wouldn't cope with much snow.

Those Brashers would be pretty handy in case you are held captive in a cellar by a psychopath and need an excuse to saw your own foot off.

Other than that ... 🙁

I had several pairs of Timberland Goretex Chukka's over the last 15 years or so, best shoes I have ever had!

Not all the Brasher shoes are quite as minging as those ones! They do a shoe called the Countrymaster GTX that looks ok, and their approach shoes are fine.

I wear Brasher approach shoes most days as they're very comfy.

Now Surf-Mat, I'm not one for a "...you fail, no You fail, no YOU fail type..." thing. It's just a big truck of childishness. But, firstly, FFS man, can't you take a joke?! And secondly, if I rip the shit out of a slightly nerdy pair of Brashers, do you really think I'd recommend possibly the nerdiest pair of Clarks shoes ever made?

I could make a "fail" phrase up and find a "fail" pic to say that you're taking yourself slightly too seriously...but we both know life's too short don't you think?

dd - oops, I missed the "humour" 😳 😆

They aren't exactly smart but Haglof make some excellent "approach" shoes. They (Vertigos) are SO superior to any others I've had that it's silly. They seem impossible to mark (with dirt), grip amazingly on wet rocks/slippery surfaces, are totally waterproof and breathable and with a heat moulded sole, very very comfortable.

The "smartest" they do are these which are slightly geeky:
