Outfitting my man cave. What vice should I get? I'm thinking of 4" engineer vices with removable jaws. Are relatively cheap vices like this record worth having? I guess I need soft jaws too.

Any help appreciated.

Try and get a second hand record vice, will cost about the same but 100 times better.

No help here, just posting so I remember to check this thread as I need a new one after snapping the old one with inappropriate force.

Thanks Delibury. I did look on ebay for second hand vices but they seem to go for silly money. Are the old ones really that much better? The one I linked to claims to be made in Sheffield.

My Dad had a record vice he bought from the scrap yard - it was probably 40 years old but in perfect working order

One of my mates managed to break the body of it by hanging off a scaffold pole trying to press a new bearing into a Fiesta hub.

He wrote to Record asking for a price of the body and they replaced the whole thing FOC.

I'd just go for something that looked pretty bomb proof probably something old from a second hand tool store as I am cheap. Don't see why that record one wouldn't be fine. Why soft jaws? I've always just used a couple of bits of wood or a bit of rubber mat to pad the jaws, am I missing out?

I've got an old Record

That belonged to my father
That belonged to my mother's father
That belonged to my father's father
That my dad can remember accidentally backing his dad's car into in the 40's when a kid.

I really should have some kids so that it has a good home to go to in 30-40 years.

What a dull thread. I was hoping for rather more given the title.

Kinky sex and class A for me

When I'm not chopping wood I have other vices.

Record No.4 is a good starter vice. But the daddy of all vices is the 75.

A second hand Record off ebay is a good idea.
a quick release is very handy to have. take the time to make sure it is bolted down properly, and invest in some nice soft/fibre jaws too.

I have that wee one you posted a link to up there ^ had it for about 10 years and its superb for the money ( I paid £20 from Machine Mart), as long as your not intent on giving it major "scaffolding pole" type abuse. A vice is a real godsend to be honest, I couldn't do without one now!

G and M tools are good for bits like this, I've just bought one of these for the garage.
