Have a trip to Portland lined up in September. 2 weeks biking followed by 2 weeks of... something else. Anyone been and have any ideas / recommendation? Its that, or come back and spend 2 weeks in the Lake District (which I'm not averse to but while I'm out there...)

I've heard Portland is a cool city to just hang out in. Only been to Seattle in WA, which was fun to hang out in. 2 weeks is a long time in a city IMO, Vancouver is another nearby, San Francisco further but unmissable IMO.

I like Rough Guides.

Watch the US series "Portlandia" (netflix or youtube clips of it) and it will tell you all you need to know about the fixie hipster vegan lesbian/bi/gay metrosexual bearded ecowarrior types you will encounter.
