My lovely wife bought me a blacksmithing course for Christmas. I’m sooo looking forward to it, but......

I don’t know what to make.

A wrought iron frame?
A fire poker?
Some sort of bent spoon for my rear brake?

It’s only a day long and whilst I can handle the tools I don’t think I’ll be able to make anything too intricate

A wrought iron frame

No point, One-On got that market covered with the Inbred.

I had a course for my birthday just before Christmas.

We started with S hooks, then made a coal hook for the pizza oven, then finished with a small knife. I had an antler for the handle.

Any poker type thing is good as you get to use a few techniques.

I made a fruit bowl. It was shit.

Don't make a fruit bowl.

Keep it simple. Some sort of poker with a nice detail for a handle or something.

How long is the course. A knife would not be doable on a one / two day intro.

A wildwood bushcraft steel blade survival knife featuring:

Tzenku watermarked 4" steel blade with Norwegian grind, secondary bevel and a hidden gommet.

HopiGopi boxwood scales, mirror polished sealed with Hanke oil

Brass trisket rivets

Ferghus antler pommel (drilled)

I made a poker / two-pronged fork with a Rams head. Loads of techniques employed, my arms were utterly shagged by the end of the day.

I now have one of the fanciest fire-pit-sausage-forks in Sussex.

I’ve made a few branding irons in the past. Not the most useful thing to have but they can be fun to make and might make a more interesting fire poke.

They get really experienced bladesmiths to make a knife on forged in fire in 6 hours and many fail.badly. So even a simple campknife might be a stretch in a day. I second the poker.route
