What should I do with 42 out of date mince pies?

[#13124817]

mrsbunk has just arrived home with several boxes of mince pies a month and a bit past their best before date. Mix of Lidl and Tesco in case it matters.

I quite like mince pies, but it'll be summer by the time I eat them all.

edit. 41 now. I think I'll survive but they definitely have a tinge to them.

Eat them.

Summer?! They wouldn't see out January in our house, even if I did have to shave them first 😀

Freeze them, and then use them instead of clay pigeons.

Best Before means f__k all. Unless they smell like they're mouldy, or are mouldy, they're fine.

Use By needs a bit more attention (but, again, unless it's mouldy or smells mouldy, it's probably fine)

Food banks will take them, or give to a homeless charity.

Best before date is only a guide.
Heat them in oven and get stuck in.
As mrsbunk brought them home she should help you - 2 a day for each of you...gone in 10 days!

Keep eating them and feed the birds, our excess mince pies were very much liked by the local robin.

They won't be accepted by a charity.
I'm less sure about food banks.

they will be fine for months.. assuming they are in plastic

worst case is the pastry would be a little stale

Sadly not suitable for foodbanks round here Bunnyhop - They came from the foodbank mrsbunk helps at.

I like the idea of feeding the local wildlife but I worry I'm just laying traps for thecatbunk.

Freezing them and shooting them wins so far. But I'll probably just eat them.

I'd be careful about feeding them to foxes. Raisins are meant to be poisonous/toxic to dogs, so may also well be for foxes?

Until you bite into it, start chewing and then find out that the mould starts growing on the inside of the pastry.

Don't ask how I know. 😋😱🤮

Warm them in the oven a little before eating to crisp the pastry back up would be my suggestion.
The only downside I can see to your predicament is the potential to need a larger pair of trousers in a week or so.
Also they freeze easily if you feel the need to spread the rate of consumption.

Yeah both foxes and dogs are canids.

I did a quick search and it seems foxes are less sensitive to grape products than dogs, but still, not a good idea, especially a pile of 40 odd mince pies!

Leave one out on the side and see how long they actually take to go off.

Freeze the rest, then microwave as required with topping of choice.

I'd bin them, then enjoy the custard and booze you'd got, without the custard and booze being ruined by the presence of the mince pies.

Once had a chocolate muffin thrown back at me by a homeless chap in Edinburgh who'd though I was handing him cash. Beware discerning beggars.

Hand them out to cockney types. I believe they like them as I have heard them talking about mince pies all year long

1 Buy a box of toilet paper with soothing ointment.
2 Eat all the pies

Leave some vanilla ice cream out to soften.
Chop mince pies up and stir into the ice cream. Re-freeze and enjoy at will. Lovely stuff.

The mincemeat filling by design is preserved pretty much indefinitely, you can safely eat them until and unless you can see or taste some evidence of mould on the pastry.

I can’t remember ever seeing one go off but that may party be due to their short lifespan in my household.

Could make an interesting drink, It's already got fruit and sugar, a wine or spirit?

The local brewery did this over Christmas. Wasn't great in my opinion, so I can't recommend making beer out of it.

Some sort of Turner prize art installation?

”the emptiness of Christmas” type effort or something. Scatter them about next to a broken fridge, sprinkled with pine needles, that kind of idea

You could make a fortune.

Your question took me back around 20 years to when I used to think this was funny.

Thankfully the internet (and I) have changed a bit!
