What do people recommend? Had a nosey at a few the other day and the Beats variety seem to be very popular but is this just the case of fashion or are they actually very good?
Fancy treating myself to some for crimbo but seems a minefield
I like Sennheiser PX100's (Mk2). quite portable too and not stupid big on your head.
Currys were doing them for £30 a few weeks ago, reduced from £50.
natural sound unlike them Beats things which I found totally overblown and muffled when I tried them
I also like my sennheiser HD238's. better then the PX100's but twice the (RRP) price of the PX100's.
Depends what music you listen to and how much you spend.
Classical/Jazz: AKG K701 - unusual diaphragm build that lends itself to classical instruments.
Rock: Grado SR225i - any Grado headphone is going to be good.
All-rounder: Beyerdynamic DT 880 Home Hi-Fi Edition - superb sound, best headphone up to £500. They are open backed so leak sound and let surrounding noise in. Headphone amp is required for ear piercing volume!
All-rounder 2nd choice: Sennheiser HD600 - Great, but just piped to the post by the Beyerdynamic's.
Monster Beats and B&W headphones are a waste of money, merely a fashion accessory.
Apparently....
Noise cancelling test have proved that Beats by Dr Dre headphones have eliminated up to 99.3% of comments on how silly wearers look
I also rate the Sennheiser px100 as a cheap, but beautifully open sound. When I'm travelling with work I use Bose QC15's, which pretty much get rid of all background noise. in terms of sound quality per £ the px100's blow them away, but if you have the money definitely give the Bose a listen.
On the opposite end of the scale the Beats that the kids wear are rubbish, the sound isn't natural and the bass booms, 'style' over substance.
Depends how much you want to spend... Been happy with my Grados. (Agree with others above that beats suck, very base heavy which the yoof seem to like)
You need to listen before buying.
I bought some expensive headphones (sorry I've forgotten the brand), got them home and they were very disappointing. I took them back with my old Sennheisers and got the lady that sold them to me to compare. She agreed that the expensive ones were objectively worse and sold me another pair of Sennheisers that were cheaper and even nicer than the old ones.
The main problem in my local shops is packaging, sellers seem reluctant to break the seals on expensive headphones so you can compare.
Those there Sennheiser px100 jobbies
What are they like for keeping the sound in?
My Mrs has a pretty low tolerance to being able to hear anything from my headphones when I'm sat next to her on a plane and I can't handle in ear ones for long.
I was going to book seats at either end of the plane but that may cause other problems 🙂
Monster Beats and B&W headphones are a waste of money, merely a fashion accessory.
Monster are yes, but the B&W stuff is properly good. They, arguably, make some of the best sounding speakers in the world so there is actual knowledge going into their headphones. Read any review as to how good they are. I've got some P3s and they are the dogs danglies. Also have some UE Triple Fi's and Sennheiser HD580s and the B&Ws are every bit as good.
I have a set of sennheiser CX300ii 'in ear' jobs and they're good but would prefer some 'over ear' headphones. Could never work out what size rubber piece worked best for my ears, small or medium. Will 'over ear' headphones provide a better sound? Them PX100's may be an option, any other good options in that sound bracket?
The PX100's are open backed so will leak a load of music out. Still get them though as they are great and well worth £30 if you find them for that much.
I'd only buy them from a decent shop (as opposed to an ebay or Play seller for example) as I believe there are a lot of snide ones about.
probably not that good for a plane journey. Noise cancelling ones would be the jobby. I've got some sony (in ear) ones that plug into my Sony MP3 player and they have noise cancelling built in. They are great little headphones to be fair too. Sony do do a noise cancelling version for any MP3 player so that might be worth a look. I think the (any MP3 player) version were £60? last time I saw them in a duty free shop.
Looks like I might have to try a pair out. I tried some beats by dre and was not impressed!
I've got these and they're great http://www.whathifi.com/review/panasonic-rp-htx7
Monster Beats [s]and B&W[/s] headphones are a waste of money, merely a fashion accessory.
There, FTFY. B&W, as has been pointed out, are world-renowned for their quality, a cursory search through Google would tell you that.
There are some Philips ones, very plain, no fancy graphics, but have been getting terrific reviews, cost >£100, or perhaps a bit more. I'm not fussed about over-ear phones, I need canalphones to block machine noise, and to be easy to just stuff into a pocket in a little case, but, should I buy a pair of over-ear phones, then B&W P3's FTW, because they'll fold up fairly neatly, and they sound very good. Not as detailed as my Shure SE215's or my Ultimate Ears TripleFi10 Studio IEM's, but very close.
Sony MDR XB700, Huge, but the most comfortable headphones EVER. Like strapping two fluffy pillows to your head. I can wear them for hours and hours no probs. You get some funny looks though! 😀
Sony MDR 570LP. Bargain price too.
Richer sound had some akg ones on offer
I have the sennheiser PXC 350. Bought a cpl,of years ago when I was commuting a long distance on plane and train, sound great and eliminate transport noise but you can still hear the call for your stop.

Just last week got some PX 200-II 'noise cancelling' in readiness for an overnighter in hospital.
£50 in HMV reduced from £100 .... Though they appear to be around the £50 mark online too.
Been getting plenty of use and have been very impressed.
Had the same experience regarding retailers not willing to break open packaging in order to try out, incidentally.
Monster Beats and B&W headphones are a waste of money, merely a fashion accessory.
Totally disagree! I have the B&W P5's and they're excellent.
I totally disagree, I had a pair of B&W p5 and p3 and thought they were both muddy and flat as hell.(even after running in)
Very disappointed as I've been very impressed with the other b&w items I've purchased.
I guess it depend on the music you listen to and the source. It also proves you should audition them befor parting with any cash 🙂
Totally disagree! I have the B&W P5's and they're excellent.
It's only my preference, I thought they lacked clarity and were incomparable with other offerings at the same price. They look awesome, but was ultimately disappointed with how they sounded.
I am aware of B&W's experience with speakers (and I really like them) but wasn't impressed with either the P3's or P5's. Nor was my old man who runs B&W speakers as part of a Hi-Fi setup, his opinion echoed mine.
I suppose it proves that the OP needs to try before be buys.
I'm using Sennheiser HD250's for studio monitoring at the moment. I got them trade price through work but we're selling them at £44 and I'd certainly pay that for them.
Everything about them is excellent - sound, build quality, looks, fit.
Buy 'em.
My Shure SRH840s seem to work pretty well - closed back so no leakage and they sound somewhat similar to my Shure SE535s IEMs - a little drier with not such a smooth midrange.
Try some comply earpieces with your Senn CX300s for the flight - all noise cancelling headphones compromise the sound quality and, as the gadget show demonstrated, the IEMs work better anyway.
As mentioned before you'll want to think about listening environment, some designs are open, semi open,or closed driver cases. open ones will allow noise to both leak in or out .
I use AKG's
look at Sennheiser,Audio Tehnica ,Grado etc.
Avoid Beats,Skullcandy etc.
Oh and how could i forget Shure ! excellent
Small hijack - what over ear that are bluetooth and maybe also possibly noise cancelling?
I'm sure I'll die and go to audiophile purgatory as the sound quality will be pants for someone with any taste (that's probably not me! I listen as many audiobooks as music too so I suspect that might not be as quality dependent) but the convenience of a set to use in my workshop or when travelling that I can hear over background noise without the faff of cables is a win for me.
