Her HTC thingy is failing after 18 months (poor battery and signal strength) so I'm thinking of getting her a new one for Xmas. She uses it mostly for texting and Facebook so anything that integrates those in a user friendly manner would be best. Something Android-based possibly best.
Haven't had to look into phones since getting my iP4 2yrs+ ago, so have no idea what's hot and what's not.

I should have added that she doesn't do "complicated phones" because as good as they can be, she really will only use it for the basics. Therefore any iPhones and higher end Androids are going to be overkill.

Which Desire is that? The original? Am looking for new or maybe 6-12 months old.

I kind of know what you're saying, but it's still overkill for what she'll use it for. And iPhones still go for a premium which means paying over the odds for what's needed.

Nexus 4 is the go-to Android at the moment IMO. Very hard to beat for the price.
If she's a text hound, maybe look at Blackberry devices?

My mrs just upgraded to the Sony Xperia T. She loves it.
@spacemonkey - It's just my poor photo taking skills as I can assure you there is no 'ding' see pics 2 and 3 of same edge and you will see. I don't mind if you don't want it, but honesty is one thing I can assure you of so take my word for it 🙂
