BigDummy - MemberA lot of why people are or are not keen on particular musicians' music is down to image, and to choices that they made in their formative years. That cannot be a surprising idea.
Of course BD, I fully get that.
But once the hormones have died down a bit and you realise that it's the breadth of your mind not your trousers that matters, it's time to just enjoy the music, innit?
Sport is different, but most people don't let teenage prejudices and tribal affiliations linger so long in the appreciation of other forms of art.
You don't still solely exist on a literary diet of Razzle, Commando, Jennings and the Beano annual, do you?
TBH I'm really not interested in any artist - I couldn't care less if Jim Morrison blew goats or that David Hockney doesn't clean out his budgie.
I reckon I could still shake my good leg to a bit of Gaz Glitter at the local hop without feeling too bad about it.

Moore can come out if you have a better/worse alternative.
what is it about the Beatles music that folk don't like? It's shit.
No, you don't like it, which is not the same thing at all. Regardless of personal preferences, they were a hugely important and influential band.
And I really don't understand the jazz hate - given its exceptional diversity. You may as well complain that you hate French food, as if moules mariniere and ratatouille taste the same.
I've yet to hear a blues track I like, but they're probably out there, just can't be arsed to find them
Just on the off chance you might like this?
Can Chris Martin also be in the band of death....please?
But once the hormones have died down a bit... it's time to just enjoy the music
Fine, but that doesn't mean you should graduate to your dad's music collection as you age, necessarily. Large amounts of music are still being produced, afterall. I'm not especially hormonal, but I still don't have anything much to do with the 60s. I spent a month on Die Antwoord recently, which was hilarious.
People don't still solely exist on a literary diet of Commando...
They do not, but my aversion to Jane Austen and Emily Bronte has survived since A-level English lit. Again, there are plenty of books. Far more than you can read. The passage of time doesn't make returning to something you don't want to read either necessary or especially desirable.

It's shit. (she loves you yeah yeah yeah.....who could not think that was vomit inducing who had not either been lobotomised or trapped in a gulag)But not as shit as baroque. Which I really hate.
OK going into old man mode here. My older sister started listening to the Beatles when they first appeared. I was 9 at the time. Compared to the pop music of the day She Loves You, Please Please Me et. al. were brilliant. Vibrant, fresh - and as with all pop music "ours". I'm not surprised people younger than me would perhaps wonder what all the fuss was about as there have been many brilliant bands ever since.
Since then I've listened to and loved many different genres and although I rarely listen to The Beatles these days and usually the late albums like Let it Be, when I do hear the early stuff I am reminded of the impact they made and yes, it probably was bigger than any individual band or artist before or since. They changed the musical scene in a dramatic way. I can only think of the impact of Punk as similar (and that wasn't just one band).
I am old but not quite old enough to remember baroque the first time around, but I like that too. However I think it's important to bear in mind that not every note of every tune in any genre, from any period, by any band or artist, deserves to be either revered or reviled. There is Beatles and baroque I don't like. There is country and jazz I do like (though it took a long time to reach that stage). I mean I even like one piece by Andrew Lloyd Webber (there I've confessed it).
That phoney Irish country type thing that I saw at my parents house once!
There is a show on ALBA called the something OPREY.. unbelievable!
Probably worth a look just for the craik.

Can Chris Martin also be in the band of death....please?
No ... he's just too dull ... ๐
Have him play keyboards in the ... Band of Bland
Country/western, R+B, Hiphops, Chsrt Music, and Jazz
MrsH loves having Heart or Smooth radio on.
Saying that I can imagine Radio6 sounds off-key or dreary to non-fans.
Plus when she was heavily pregnant I couldn't get ANYONE to go with me to see AFI in concert so had to go on my own.
Mark King on bass for the Band of Death. Extremely talented, but manages to sound like a hammer drill going to work on a blue engineering brick.
His brother, Nathan, the guitarist in Level42, is a phenominally good bass player in contrast.
isto, not really, thanks though.
BigDummy - MemberFine, but that doesn't mean you should graduate to your dad's music collection as you age,
Once again, innit?
Personally, I am well down wit da yoot, as you can obviously tell.
Motorloaf and Meathead are a couple of the younger beat combos I've grooved on recently.
That Lenny, what a card.
one for edhornby
Re. The Beatles, with the exception of George, they are all arseholes. John Lennon in particular. That's why I hate them with a passion
Hard to despise the Beatles, but neither Lennon or McCartney's songwriting does it for me.
Really like a lot of Harrison's stuff though. And Ringo's work on Thomas the Tank Engine is immense.
with the exception of George, they are all arseholes.
Did you see that TV doc about him?
He did come across like a bit of an arsehole as well, TBF.
it's been covered, but:
Jazz, the smiths, reggae.
+ all the bland filler on R2, which is most of it.
+ all the shite on R6, that only gets played because it's new, which is most of it.
i can't complain about R1, i'm not a 13yr old girl, i'm not meant to like R1.
There is a show on ALBA called the something OPREY.. unbelievable!
Probably named after the "Grand Ole Oprey" in Nashville which similarly has little connection with "proper" country music.
Most things Irish.
Actually most things where an accent is used to aid authenticity. This includes a lot of grime.
good ol' boy type country is pretty desperate.
Dislike the Beatles and Queen, Pet Shop Boys are pretty rank
I really like Northern Soul, Ska and old windrush. My other half doesn't AT ALL. What do we have in common? Wedding DJ will be interesting.... a Ska song then suddenly into Gary Barlow? ๐
Yes Gary effing Barlow...whatever talent he once had has been completely forgotten following the utter dirge he's been chucking out of late.
Alfie Bowe....bejasus, I can sing like that if I want to...but I wouldn't would I!
Rap.....barring some of the older more original stuff, I can't believe how appalling it generally is!
Mika....should be taken outside and stoned to death!
Musicals. Theatre is great, music is great, but they really shouldn't be mixed.
Apart from that I can find something to like in any genre - except probably modern R&B.
to be fair, the stuff i mentioned (maroon5 aside), i don't actively "hate"; it just does nothing at all for me so i generally choose to avoid listening to it if/when i have the choice.
Donk... hellish repetitive bass heavy mess from the midlands.
Totally get the Beatles hate.
It's not really them, or their music... I actually quite like 'A Day In The Life', although that one that goes "I love you yeah yeah yeah" makes me want to smash things. It's the constant banging on about them that drives me nuts. I can kind of understand the old gits at the BBC doing it, they were of their time, (I'm sure I'll be banging on about early nineties rave culture when I'm old), but when the young sycophants on R6 start up... grr!
You also get the old 'music owes everything to The Beatles' line trotted out, even by one of my old music teachers. I don't agree. I hate guitar music generally, all the music I like that isn't classical stems from Disco, Soul, Funk and Gospel. I'm pretty sure The Beatles didn't invent that.
Oh yeah, music I despise? Metal; I think it sounds so bad, but worse than that is how serious all those teenage boys take it. Ridiculous. There's also a type of music that I'm not sure if it has a name but am convinced it's made in a factory near Rotherham and sold direct to large shopping centre's and takeaway joints. Kind of like highly polished turgid pop-trance with hammy autotuned vocals. I hate that.
Ah yes, Autotune. That does deserve to be despised.
Acid Brass ๐ that was a product of Salford University when I was there, half that band were on my course, the arranger was a tutor. Quite a lot of the band moaned about it being 'a loada roobish' but then changed their mind when it was well received !!
I understand the viewpoint about the beatles, they are now a historical item because so many of the innovations have been consumed and reinvented by subsequent artists, so you filter out the (relative) mediocrity and focus on the good stuff
same with Elvis - the sun sessions and his 68 comeback are still well regarded highpoints but his vegas cheeseburger period, and the films... well...
Rusty makes the great point about assessing each bit of music on it's own merits and not worrying about genre; a lot of people don't like Ambient, Hip-hop has also been listed as a no, but I bet all those would listen to Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack and say 'that is great'
I can understand the Beatles hate towards some of the early more poppy songs but I think they have produced such a wide body of music it can't all be labelled the same.
Take this for example:
It has to be one of their most their ground breaking pieces and is worlds apart from the "she loves you yeah yeah yeah" type songs.
Don't think there's any genre I would completely dismiss but screamo type stuff I find it very hard to muster up any enthusiasm for. And commercial hip-hop/rnb now is pretty dreadful (especially for someone who loved hip-hop in the 90s before it was pop music).
Donk... hellish repetitive bass heavy mess from the midlands.
How dare you - it's spiritual home is Bolton (and it is shit but I secretly quite like it).
haha Put a Donk On It is a tune ๐
I also really can't get into 99% of stuff you hear on radio 1. Boring tedious middle of the road guff with no balls. Very "safe" music. Not a massive fan of metalcore either but I like some stuff and different flavours of it - the more hardcore punk influenced stuff I can get into but never been a fan of In Flames, Killswitch etc.
