Finally got round to building a temporary fence after Storm Arwen blew a tree over and knocked over the garden wall. Was going to get the wall rebuilt but trying to get a quote under 5 figures is proving difficult at the moment, probably due to everyone bring in demand for last-minute works for the Open.

Hmm I recognise that house I reckon but not sure where?
Don't live in a strath do you?

Why not rebuild the wall yourself? Looks like you’ve done a good job with the fence.
Buy a second hand bell mixer and crack on!

Shit! My cover's blown!
Yeah, I thought about rebuilding the wall but it needs a lot of work to be fair to the expensive builders. Lots of tree roots so it needs a full garden clearance and then probably a thin strip foundation and double skin, the garden's about 3ft higher than the pavement. We're doing work to the house starting next month so once that's all finished I'll probably have a crack at sorting it properly.
Very utilitarian @Saccades.
But might i suggest you use angle brackets inside the top corners. Screws into end grain have a habit of loosening off, end grain fixings are not as strong as through face fixings.
Cheers, no idea what I'm doing (as I'm sure you can tell), but need a place to park my bum at times.
I'll go hunt out those brackets and fit.
👍
Posting from my phone so no chance of a picture but here is a link of someone can make the photo appear.

I am making the base of the coffee table and needed to clamp some wood but my clamp could not reach. Rather than buy a deep throat clamp I put holes in a couple of bits of wood, threaded the small clamps through and suddenly had deep throat clamps. The two bits of wood above the clamp is to keep the long wood parallel.
Hope that makes some sense but either way, it works.
Interesting er...mitres 🙂
Is that for ventilation ?.

Oh, what he posted while I was faffing around with labelling it
You can hook 2 clamps together for longer clamps.
pk13 - that gives greater length rather than deeper throat doesn't it?

Sorry - I was tractor browsing earlier
If you're going to make a Telecaster from scratch:

You really need to make a Fender-inspired stand to rest it on

I heard that Fender is going to start a line of wind instruments.
Theres bound to be a Saxofender in there.
All I can think of is pam and archer now #outlaw country.
Cheap ratchet straps are good clamp replacements.
The end result, and with good help and advice from the team on here, I am pleased with. I will let the last rub of Osmo oil soak in overnight and the smell disperse tomorrow and bring it into the house.

If you look carefully you can see I have reduced the levitation down to a more reasonable 1.4cm
Today I have mostly been making..... Handlebars! What can possibly go wrong 🙂
Wanted some 650mm flat bars for my homemade cx / gravel bike but with 16deg backsweep, and with the bend as far out as possible to reduce the loss of reach. Will probably get some sqlab ones long term but these are just to try out. Columbus cromo steel so not too heavy and took plenty of force to get the bend in, so pretty sure they won't be snapping anytime soon. Aluminium shim 22mm to 38mm.

Looks great WCA. Nice one. 😊👍
I got a bit of HiFi kit which had a slightly too high output voltage for my amplifier so made up some cables with resistors in the amp end to attenuate the signal (about -3.5db) and really happy with how they came out. Probably about £18 to make but that's mostly down to having to use connectors with enough room inside for the resistor network.

This was meant to be a book case but because the shelves don't have backs to them, it is now a display unit apparently. Anyway, it is now displaying stuff.

Bookcase MK2 to follow
which everyone else seems to think are screwdrivers or for scraping the pointing out of paving
You've met Mrs Sandwich then?
I made this pile of bricks and glass into a panelled pile of bricks and glass.
Plus also some custom trim/architrave around the room division.

That's very well done fella that Victorian townhouse or late 20s looking at the ceiling hight?
I have finally finished the book case. It is the one on the right without any books on it as opposed to the one on the left without any books on it which is a set of display shelves.

This, hopefully, concludes the latest spurt of carpentry as we are fully wooded up with this little set of three different but complementary items. Thanks to all who have helped and advised.

Very nice Nick.
They look rad WCA. They go so nicely all together. Well done 👏
You should be proud of them.
Chapeau WCA.
Looks good WCA, I am always impressed with how quickly you get stuff done.
Looking good
Kayak, I love how out of sync your ukworkshop and singletrack "made recently" posts are.

Ah! So did I! But I looked back in the thread and couldn't see a post about it, so I presumed I was simply going mad.
Thank you!
It might be the other one I did on the other side of the house a year ago.
I can't remember. 😂
It seems like every forum has this thread! 😊
It's a lovely Saturdays afternoon so lets discuss drinks coasters. I have recently made a wooden coffee table and so have become paranoid about ring marks from wine glasses etc.
The obvious answer is to use drinks coasters and I have made some pretty ones in the past such as the blue one in the photo but these have some fundamental problems I wanted to resolve.

The standard coaster is only a little larger than the base of a mug or glass which means you have to focus when resting your drink on them. The consequence of missing the perfect placement is that your drink gets poured across the table as the glass topples. This is not a good thing.

My new wooden design overcomes these issues. It is a little larger to make glass placement easier and accuracy less of an issue but more important is the thickness and profile of the base. The already thin coaster is gently chamfered towards the edges so, should you place your glass only half on it, the glass will still balance with its edge on the table.

Hopefully this will prevent ring marks and spillages in the future.

That's the best excuse for over-sanding I've ever heard.
Only kidding 😉
And I'll just go back to feeling inadequate.
WCA you have applied perfect design engineering there. Well done good sir!

Oh tell me about it, I feel like some sort of Patreon being on Insta!
Slightly less 'craftsmanship' but I re-used the chipboard from the old bookcase to finally hang the bunch of random, mis-fit spanners that have been sat in a couple of biscuit tins for about 3 years since a neighbour gave them to me to stop her husband tinkering with the car. Some metric, most not but I am sure I will buy another old wreck of a car that I can use them on, I nearly bought a MKX Jag last week until I remembered I was sober and it was a really bad idea 🙂

Less made, more unmade. 8yrs after buying the van, finally stripped it back to start a minor conversion.

Warning, not up to the impressive standards displayed on this thread.
Made a mobile raised bed / planter out of leftover bits of 6x2 and 4x2. Lined with dpm, made a loads of holes in the bottom and then lined the bottom with weed barrier to stop the dirt and compost mix falling out.
It’s only for herbs that I use a lot in cooking and a lettuce in the centre. I need to hide the uneven boards used for the bottom, as it is playing havoc with my ocd. Really handy it being moveable.
It’s phase #1 in getting my bbq area a bit nicer.
Also following on from my utility room worktop repair thread, this was a test to see how yacht varnish came out. Have to say very impressed, will be using it to refurb the oak worktop.
Now I just have to figure out how to stop the 11 month puppy from digging up and eating the herbs.

Spot of dry stone walling practice before I have to face up a retaining wall. Not bad considering it's the scraps from another wall that's been demoilseed and rebuilt with the good bits
(Not finished BTW! )

Emptying the freezer before this year's crop starts yields tasty results.
Like the planter. Only suggestion for puppy prevention is a chicken wire fence. Works to keep pidgeons and cats off my peas.
Those shelves and table are bloody lovely WCA!
After our success in first lockdown we put up a new fence between us and the neighbours. It was scheduled to be complete the week of May Day Bank Holiday but Wickes fouled up the post order and we had to get more from the local supplier on the Thursday.
As it was with rusty chainlink and concrete posts that were badly spalled in places.
[/img]
We removed the chainlink and skip full of garden waste then employed a local chap to lift out the old fenceposts (my back at 59 will not tolerate 100kg post lifts anymore)
Posts in and first run of fencing 2/3 complete. A delay due to a design change Saturday afternoon after all the local Durapost suppliers were shut.
[/img]
Almost complete, sliding dog gate (!) so the pooches can socialise (the design change) not installed and section of angled fence not cut alongside it.
[/img]
Final pic once the last cut is completed and the sliding panel is firmly in place. Herself got some arty resin tree thing to fill the gap filled with short lengths of featheredge.
The coffee table I made is fine but quite large and difficult to reach from the armchair. The trouble is that there is not really space for a table next to the main armchair used because of a second 'occasional chair'. No idea why we can't just move that but there must be reasons.
Anyway, this morning I decided to make a narrow table for the gap between the chairs that can hold a glass and bowl of nuts while still fitting. Also added a wine bottle steady storage to balance out the design.
Not finished as it only has the first coat of varnish but pleased how far I got in a day. I have some video of me making it so might make a new "Are you bored enough" video if anyone is bored enough to want one.

Neither the time nor available space to work on anything much, and not much inclination, tbh, but we were given Friday off, those whose shift patterns covered the weekend, and after prevaricating over whether to go out somewhere because the weather looked really iffy, I went over to Lacock and had a walk out of the village then followed the river back. Partway round there’s a convenient fallen tree trunk that’s just right to sit on for a drink and a snack, but there’s nowhere to put an insulated drink bottle without it falling over. So I made a drink holder.

The wood is very soft, five minutes with my Opinel pocket knife, and a convenient place to put my bottle was had. 😎
I took down my son’s treehouse after 10 years of it being disused.
Knocked up a BBQ shelter with the reclaimed timber.
Mrs ColP then decided that she wanted an Ooni so I knocked together a little house for that out of some spare ply I had, and attached it to the side of the BBQ shelter.
Wish I’d known about the Ooni before doing the BBQ shelter as I’d have done it all together.

nice
Good impro and kudos for the recycling bit won't rain runoff the BBQ house roof on to the ooni roof and then back onto BBQ?
A little project on the go to make an adapter to use an Ortlieb 7l bar bag on my Brompton. Annoyingly the Ortlieb Mini O bags were discontinued last year and are now going for over £300 on eBay! 🙈
So I bought an alloy adapter plate off Amazon and a spare Rixen Kaul bracket I could adapt. A piece of 5mm thick aluminium off cut drilled out and fixed the plate onto.

@kimura54321 very nice work on that. I’ve used the Brompton ortlieb bag on my Brompton for years, brilliant bits of kit for commuting in all weathers. Mine isn’t the mini bag (annoyingly now they are worth so much !)
@walowiz - Thanks!
The regular sized ones go for a fair whack as well to be fair just not over four times the price second hand…
Agreed on Ortlieb being great, they are just bomb proof and kind of set the standard for me. I have a smart looking black Caradice Stockport bag to use in the office, but wanted a smaller one when not commuting which I though would be simpler than it was 😂
The Ortlieb adapter is simnilar to something I made recently for an Alpkit Gravel bag. A bit of plywood to carry the Klickfix back plate means the bag can be clicked on and off easily for popping into shops etc, and avoids having to use the annoying velcro straps which inevitably cause cable rub and wear patches.

A friend of mine very sadly lost her dad fairly recently and asked if I'd make a box for his ashes for home.
The mountain scene on top was a favourite place of his and the text holds special meaning.
Tiger (Brown) Oak, European Oak and resin.

The engraving was hand cut, as in, I handed it to someone with a cnc router, and there is an end-grain border inlay to the top.
7 points are available if you can identify the mountain scene.

Buttermere?
Nope.
(It's very simplified obviously. More of a nod to it... 😉)
Glencoe?
Buichaille etive mor?
I just saw Forever Autumn and thought War Of The Worlds.
Glencoe 👍
That’s lovely Kayak.
nice box Kayak,
Was it a twister or a feast you sourced the label from?
Go on Kayak - you know you want to...

Damn!
atleast you remembered to pit the joke on the back 😀
seriously though. it looks great

The kids kept losing things under the gaps in the radiator cover. Stuck a bit of floorboard behind to stop it. So simple, no idea why it didn't occur to me sooner.

Mind and drill some holes in them so the convection still works come winter 😉
Rain canopy for the shed. £12.49 for some shelving brackets off ebay, including a 10 degree bend, next day delivery!
Pallet wood for the canopy.
Finally finished the magazine table. Remind me not to do anything with resin again. Hateful stuff.

With Marylyn restricted to the house and the weather being so hot, I have spent some time in the garage playing with my band saw.
I present 5 bandsaw boxes of various designs, a mobile phone desk tidy and a school of fish, all stood on my Motor Sport inspired coffee table.

Too much time on my hands?
For ages i've wanted to add a fan to the TV cabinet the Xbox sits in (the series X gets PROPER hot...and the warm air just sits in teh cabinet...)
So I got a 15 quid USB powered fan to run off the X box...
The 'pre' photo..

And after taking the jigsaw to the cabinet!

It has an inline off-L-M-H switch as the Xbox USB is always on..
But it works a treat and really vents out all the hot air!
DrP
I was asked if I could design a solution to address poor acoustics in a video meeting room in some offices of a local gaming company.
The building itself is a beautiful converted barn called the River Studio and is cited a stones throw from the River Avon as it runs through Warwickshire.
The design I came up with took the profile of the actual river nearby (with a little artistic license) and I scaled and arranged it so that it would run across walls and ceiling. Cut by cnc from a layer of 6mm mdf with a 6mm 'bank', and once filled with preserved acoustic moss, would help to improve the sound quality and lessen the echo in the room.
Hard to photograph! It's massive!
It took me a solid week sticking the moss to the boards including the two scorcher days!
I hate moss now and if I ever see any in the wild I'm going to stamp on it 😂

Importantly, it's improved the acoustics in that room massively..👌
Very nice Kayak. But arent you going to get an increase in insects 😕
So, a bit of moss-fettle improved the amplification in the room?
Very nice Kayak. But arent you going to get an increase in insects
No. Seems it's not a thing. It's used extensively in posh hotels etc all over the world. It's also anti-static and so doesn't attract much dust like other surfaces might.
This from the manufacturers-
Do moss walls attract bugs and insects?
No. Moss walls do not attract bugs. Insects are attracted to the moisture and soil in plants. Preserved moss walls do not have any kind of soil and they don’t need any water.
.
Unlike artificial plants, moss walls do not attract dust. Moss walls not only require no maintenance, but they do not have static electricity, so dust particles hardly cling to the moss.
I have been trying to use a palette knife and am sort of happy with the result. Just can't quite decide if the painting is finished or if I need to add 'something'
