I wanted a chunky pen.

So I bought a second-hand mini lathe.

And watched a bunch of YouTube videos by Blondihacks, Clough42 etc.

And learned to turn, face, turn to a face, tap and thread with a die

And now I have a chunky pen

Very nice, though I wasn't expecting it to be all metal. Usually they're wooden.

If you want to get into that gig, Axminster tools have a range of parts, mandrels and the like(A mystery to me) and a nice choice of stabilized timbers. including plastic, and one thats even made of coffee beans encapsulated in resin.

Tie elastic around the trunk of the tree.
Tie the other end of the elastic around the children.
Stand them next to each other by the tree and shout go.
Who ever runs the furthest from the tree wins and gets a free horizontal bungee ride

I like the chunky pen

I made some AXS Reverb paddles for a couple mates, then loaded another mates AXS equipped bike into my van ready to go to Wales the following day. Over dinner I had an idea and ended up making the purple one and fitting it to his bike. He only saw it in Cwmcarn car park the next day, and I left his Rockshox paddle at home so he had to ride the whole weekend with it on

Childish I know but us kids found it funny

so you can drive it off the roof into a helicopter!! :o) battlefield fans love the game because of all the crazy stuff you can do, record and upload to youtube.

My part of the game is Animation, on this project a bit of character stuff but mainly the cinematics, characters, facial animation, cameras, cinematography etc

Good enough reasons I guess.

Every year or so I open 3DSmax to have a play and immediately realise I do not have the skills.

Latest mini lathe project - headset tool. The bottom piece is threaded M12, the top drilled 12mm and tightened with the nut. The steps are 1". 1.125", 1.25" 1.5".

Now all I need is a bike that needs it's headset bearings replaced. I will be retiring my trusty pieces of wood and hammer!

Are we allowed to include things our mates have made? Theres some truly stunning woodworking on here - that table of Kayaks is an absolute work of art - so I thought I'd share this.

Its a chopping board I picked up from my mate Lee the other day. He does lovely one-off pieces. It's oak and walnut and is a truly wonderful thing. I'm scared of using it!

If you're interested you can check out his other stuff on Instagram @Woodshed_co

I made this a while back for my mother but seeing Binners post above reminded me of it.

There is a little dip in the based to hold a pen that was exactly the width of the top of the clock. The base was slightly narrower so it was easier to pick up the pen. Mum wanted on her desk so she could make notes and record the times of conversations when she was working as an advisor and time of call was important.

A couple of recent paintings. The Horses of the Camargue was a challenge from a friend because apparently horses and the sea are two of the hardest things to paint. The Needles in the Evening is the first of three I am working on. All the same shot of the needles but one in sunshine, one in clouded weather and one in full sunshine. The other two are still in early stages at the moment.

I've not drawn for years, well this century Really. So turning 40 I asked my mum for a set of Derwent pastel pencils and I've had a few previous attempts. This was a starling I photographed from a bedroom window in the tree outside.
A few attempts on standard pastel paper then I switched onto Clairefontaine Pastelmat.

I made a clock  It is for my brother, currently in Adelaide. Friends and family contributed pebbles that I set into resin filled recesses in the clock face that was made from an old garden table from his house in Cornwall. It is set to Australian time so that I know when I phone I can wake him up at an ungodly hour.

This thread has always made me feel thoroughly ashamed of my lack of practical ability.

Yesterday I did make a dinky pair of powerlink pliers from a cheap big pair using only a hacksaw, file and insulation tape.

I also made a weatherproof rear light out of a non-weatherproof rear light, an o ring, a trimmed down rubber plumbing seal and superglue.

I also made three birdboxes earlier in the year out of some old planks.

This is the height of my DIY achievements.

I needed a headset tool, none were coming up on ebay, and I refuse on principle to buy cheap Chinese rubbish. What's the only rational thing to do - make your own! It took me about a month, as I have two small kids. Most of that time was spent working out how to draw straight lines on a cylinder.

I used a steerer, cut from an old fork in my junk pile.

[img] [/img]

After all that, took about 2 minutes to get the old headset cups out. Result

@Murray - thanks. I got the saw from a rusty old box of tools that had been left out on the curb. It looked terrible when I got it, but I tried an electrolysis rust removal process, and it worked out great (although it doesn't fix the surface pitting). It's an Eclipse, stamped sometime in the 40's.

A pair of rough n ready storage boxes for under the workbench. One to hold clamps, one for... was going to be old screws/nails/brackets/hings/odds-n-sods collection but too much effort into them (although it may not look like much effort went into them). Also the blue is a much brighter blue than it appears here.

A base for the Raspberry Pi and Lepy amp just to keep them together and stop them getting jostled around so much.

Most of that time was spent working out how to draw straight lines on a cylinder.

On a flat surface. Get a straight edge. Tilt it on an angle. Roll the tube up to the straight edge. So they are both parallel and touching. Then mark your line.

You then have a straight line along the edge of the tube. Any further straight lines are marked from that data line. For example you have a tube with a circumference of 360mm. Mark 180mm around the tube at both ends. Draw a line down the tube where you have marked. You now have 2 lines directly down the middle of the tube.

Love this thread!

@relapsed_mandalorian

Love the T-Allen holder for the axles!

Half way through re-building our patio and garden path.
Had to dig out around 5 tonnes of earth, so built some planter boxes out of sleepers to save on skips, then cast some new steps between those.
5 tonnes of type 1 in and whacked down, then 2x2 20mm porcelain tiles down on a bed of 4:1 sharp sand / cement.
I’m about half way done on the tiling, 80% done on the job, lots of cutting to do now so the neighbours will be hating me.

@colp thanks bud! Just some screw in magnets from Amazon. Bloody strong too!

That patio looks like a top spot.

I did this to replace the painting (top right on peddlers cart photo) I sold.

I was given the slab of oak (750 x 200 x 60mm) as a 'thank you' for making a small wooden handle for an old family heirloom, an old silverware cheese slice - a more than generous return! I cleaned it up on thicknesser planer at work, sanded and applied several coats of Danish oil, then TIG welded the steel legs from 50 x 25mm box section. I could have done a better job preparing the steelwork before painting, a lesson learned for next time!
