Does anyone know what format the electronic download is if you purchase Windows 7?

ie. is it worth buying the install DVD too, or is the download an .iso or something similar?

Dunno about retail but the RC was ISO... just use nero to burn it.

If it's an iso and you have Nero or roxio or similar on your work pc then you can create a bootable disc from it- just double click the iso file. Alternetively, copy file to DVD or memory stick and create the bootable disc from your cd burning package there. The important thing is that you make a bootable disc from the iso image rather than just copy the iso file to a DVD.

There is another file extension in use .. I forget what it is, but if you rename it to something.iso it burns as an iso image anyway.

so does anyone actually know if the (retail) download is and iso or some form of installer?

ie. is the extra £9 for the disk a very expensive DVD-rom?

Course not! That would be useful and therefore not supported.
