Just got back from holiday. All the way from Orkney down to Warwickshire over two days.
Nearly 7 hour drive today.
Just got in the house. Everything is weird and not holiday-y. Ducked if I know what to do with myself.
What do you do to bring you back to reality?
The comedown is harsh man.
we always have fish n chips for tea when we return from a trip.
We've been back nearly a fortnight from a 3 week trip to Canada just about " normal" now though haven't had a decent night's sleep yet 😔 Just as well we are retired couldn't hack that work thing as well 🙄
Check the garage to make sure no one has nicked the bikes!
We tend to do walking trips, often, pretty basic, camping or huts so its actually nice to have a proper bed and a shower. If it's been a long trip then a trip to the barbers for a shave.
Then some decent homely food. I always have stuff in the calendar even if it's not mega exciting. Even the local club rides are nice when you've not been out for a while.
Late January on the other hand is another matter. Worst bit of the year.
Unpack and washing on.
I hate having half emptied bags lying around, if there’s not washing on within 30 mins of getting home I’m not a happy boy.
first thing kettle goes on for a proper cup of tea.
then the misery of unpacking which turns the house into even more of a tip.
and gradually working my way through an email backlog!

I often stay up all night, I believe the phrase is 'decompressing?'
And a lot of laundry.
Unpack, washing machine on, shopping, cleaning. Try and catch up with some things recorded on the telly, fall into bed and maybe get a little tearful.
I go on into a massive sulk with my mood only improved with some ice cold beers, I stashed in the fridge before we left.
Actually this year we had to shift over twenty cat turds before we could unload the car.
Its a good job firearms aren’t easily accessible in the UK or I’d have gone on a rampage shooting every little furry shit machine on sight.
If we've been abroad, kettle on and a cup of tea for herself before anything else. Then unpack, sort laundry, cases into storage and washing on.
Unpack, laundry on, everything possible tidied, cook, make fuss of cats, wash up/dishwasher load. Then and only then stop and watch some drivel on Netflix.
If you stop before that lot is finished you're done for!
I usually 'crumble' for a few hours. It's awful. Eventually get through it most times but til then it's an internal hell. I also try not to cry too much. It's all seems a little pathetic really as I'm well aware I'm exceedingly fortunate to be able to have any sort of a holiday.

Start looking at house prices wherever I've just been. It doesn't generally help the mood.
Ps I'm currently on holiday in a very, very wet and windy Cornwall. In a caravan. With a 2 year old. Handing the grandkid back will be a mixed blessing, as will space, time and a comfy bed.
Sort the post and collect the dog from kennels.
Plan to have a more organised life so we can enjoy doing the things we like doing more often.

Tomorrow I will be driving us 300 miles home, will unpack the car, then ring my parents to let them know we are back.*
MrsMC will be banging loads of washing into the washing machine at a rate that far exceeds our ability to get it dry.
Which will annoy me, and undo the wonderful 5 days we've been away.....
*ok, i may check the new baggies that Royal Mail claim to have delivered while we were away
Carry all my stuff up 104 stairs. BIke, trailer and all my kit. Thats the end of every trip for me.
Generally mourn for a few days then sulk for about a week at work.
Currently in aus for a month so the sulk will be long and significant in return this time
Wander around the garden noting what is thriving (weeds) and what has died (whatever I planted), water the ficus and anything that hasn't died except the weeds. Put the kettle on having run the tap for a minute or so. Put the lagging back on the solar thermal pipes. Pick up a guitar and tune it.

Honestly, getting home from holiday is weird. Part of it is sadness that it's over, part of it is almost relief that you're back to normality. I miss the weather and the free bar, I don't miss things like my partner losing her shit in the airport because her toddler grandson literally lost his shit on the way to the gate so had to "have his bum changed" just two short hours before we were supposed to be there.
Honestly? After unpacking & starting the washing mission, my wife and I discuss and start to plan the next adventure. We try to always have something in the pipeline, either as a family or individually. It gives us a goal to aim for.

I love going away but I love getting home as well.
Generally unpack the car, get a load of washing on, quick trip to the local shops to get milk etc.
But I mostly like going for a ride on my bike when I get back.
Then an easy dinner, watch some crap on TV and have a cuppa. Then into my own bed which I've massively missed.
Well I'm off for two weeks to Majorca on Tues which I'm really looking forward to given the fairly poor weather we've had in Ireland for late June \ July. That said, I'd far prefer it to the 40oC+ the mainland was subjected to. When I get back I will have one week leave of a 10 week work sabbatical left. Hopefully when I go back to work everyone will have forgotten about me and it'll remain that way (with the salary still going in to the bank account obviously 🙂 )
So, to answer the question, when I get back I have one week to do all those things I promised myself I was going to do on my ten weeks off, the two week camping trip will be a challenge 🙂

Have a look around the house and think ...... oh this place is quite nice.... before the unpacking starts and it looks like a bombsite

And a scroll through my phone for fav holiday pics to put on Faceache .... yeah, yeah.... but I genuinely like seeing other peoples holiday pics and it's an easy place to have a look back through mine once in while.
Off on monday ... I'm looking forward to early morning swims in the warm, clear Med
