We are looking for a set of bedside tables, having got a refund for a set where the drawers runner collapsed. The faulty set were a case of looking good on the outside but poor design on the inside. They were from a high street retailer.

A search online brings up loads of retailers selling furniture, but it is very difficult to gauge the quality of it, e.g. made.com, swoon, loaf, wayfair, etc. Then there are places like John Lewis and Ikea where we could go and view it, but their ranges and choices are limited in comparison to the online places.

Can anyone recommend an online retailer who offers good quality at a fair price?

Depends entirely on the sort of style you want but I have always been happy with these two places:

https://www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk/

Best start with what your fair price range is 🙂 We need to know if it includes unicorn tear finish and all that

Well here's the thing, I'm looking for good value. So if it's higher cost, but can be justified because it's a good product and does exactly what we want, then that's fine. I reckon our budget would be £400 for a pair, but would pay more if it seemed worth it. Conversely I'd be happy with a pair costing £70 each from Ikea, because I know their products. I wouldn't spend £70 each at Argos because I'd get tat.

There was some good looking stuff on made.com, but the first few people I asked about them had bad experiences and nothing good to say.

Ohh, I don't know, there is also www.penisland.com too (don't go the site, it's redirect hell).

Last time we looked at JL furniture it was all veneered stuff, in the end we bought loads from Habitat, all solid oak and bomb proof.

Worth doing a search for any local furniture makers. Sometimes you can find a small outfit who will do you custom made quality for no more than some of the bigger retail chains.

I'd steer you away from oak furniture land. My fiance bought a sofa from there 3 years ago and it's completely collapsed internally.

I've opened the bottom to try and fix it till we can afford a replacement. The framing is made from cheap, rough pine .The joints are just butted and held together with panel pins lighter than you'd use to hang picture frames with minimal glue.

It's properly ****ed after 3 years light use.

I've got a full range of stuff from there in our lounge (book shelf, sideboard and TV cabinet) and it's all been pretty good - the sideboard is some 10 yrs + old and apart from a couple of very minor issues it's been great. And I love that it is solid wood, not veneered self assembly rubbish.

IIRC we got some mango bedroom furniture from https://www.casabellafurniture.co.uk/ ~5 years ago, it was cheaper going direct back then rather than using their Ebay store. Very well made, I honestly think it will last the rest of our lifetime and beyond.

I was gonna suggest Pine Solutions, but they don't exist anymore. They have changed their name (and merged two websites, I think) but are the same people.

They have a good selection, here:

https://www.cotswoldco.com/bedroom-furniture/bedside-tables/

We bought quite a bit of stuff from them when we moved into our current house & it's all decent quality.

Avoid oakfurnitureland; poor quality.

My recommendation is Barker & Stonehouse - Grosvenor range; solid mahogany. I have some - I like.

Another happy customer of indigo here. Bought a dining table and benches from them earlier this year, great quality.

When they delivered the table the delivery driver noticed that the bench was a very snug fit under the table and the leather was touching the table leg. Less than an hour after the delivery driver left I had a phone call from their office asking if the bench was ok and if i wanted them to make me two new ones that were an inch shorter. I declined their offer as i'm not bothered but they still said that if it becomes a problem in the future to let them know and they'll fix it.

I'm now looking at their sofas and armchairs and will probably keep going back in the future.

If it's well made you're after I'd always recommend Ercol.

Habitat stuff isn’t bad but everything i have seen from ikea or Made has fallen apart.

the best value is second hand from ebay or etsy. i needed new furniture and sourced a few mid-century/danish pieces as new stuff from ikea etc just seems like its going to be landfill in a few years.

ended up with some teak/rosewood tables and floating wall units from designers Cado, Henning Kjaernulf and Johannes Andersen. prices have shot up recently though. not much good if you want modern either.

edit: the g-plan stuff is well made and the prices seem to be consistent as there is so much of it out there.

Can I give you another approach? How about a visit to your local charity furniture store, we have a range of them locally and British Heart being the best.

It's not that I am do good tree hugger (well not intentional tree hugger, the odd kiss and smashed lid maybe ...) but the older stuff is built better and last longer because of it and ticks the retro box (#irony) without costing several limbs.

Before you blow it out go look at there's some stunningly good, well made, solid stuff there and it's peanut prices and you give money to a good cause :/

In IKEA's price range nothing comes close in terms of construction and design. I think they offer very good value. The stuff we have has lasted.

It's in stepping away from IKEA that there seems to be a big unknown regarding quality. The middle ground of made.com, John Lewis own brand, Oak Furniture Land, Furniture Village, Next, etc, before you reach the likes of Ercol. That's where I'm looking currently and it seems a bit of gamble on what's going to turn up on the door step.

I would love to drive a van to Copenhagen and fill it up with furniture but that's not practical right now 🙂

Second hand's a good idea. We've just taken delivery of an Ercol armchair that's in great nick and will probably be handed on to the kids.

I’ve got stuff from Oak Furniture Land / Container clearance company as it was on EBay many years ago. Still in very good condition. They have gone up in price compared to what they used to be.

Barker & Stone House used to be good but now sell avg at inflated prices just because their demographic wouldn’t want to pay less

we bought a couple of ercol sideboards from barker and stonehouse, they scratch the parquet floor that deadly had installed the week before. After about 6 weeks of too and froing I got a rather large refund. I'd probably go elsewhere next time.... for comparison the sofas that came from DFS the day before, the delivery guys were very good and very careful of the floor!

My mother likes the oak furniture land stuff and she is a ****ing nightmare to satisfy when it comes to perfection but she's really pleased with what she has had so far. TV unit, tallboy storage unit, bookcase and mirror from the "original rustic range" and the "Dorset" extending dining table and leather chairs (quite a smart table). Not my cup of tea (i have totally mismatched ikea hand me downs) but i have to admit all the stuff is really well made.

Second hand furniture shops are quite good. Picked up a large oak sideboard and a 3 draw Bisley filling cabinet for £100 with delivery. Especially the ones that specialise in house clearance

I'd avoid them.

As for veneer, nothing wrong with it, much more eco friendly to strip wood for veneer than using solid and if it's done properly just as strong.

Is it oakfurniture land where they attack all the corners with a sander to make an otherwise innoffensive item look like its a novelty item?

I bought some bedside tables and a chest of drawers from West Elm and was impressed by their quality. Actually got them from John Lewis because delivery was quicker.

I've used roseland furniture in the past - either shop direct or get it on amazon

I'm no expert but it seems solid , well finished and delivered VERY well packaged. was a good price for what we got.
