A few ideas, as you can see I like cooking me!

Cold starter:
Seared scallops with black pudding or chorizo. Serve with pea puree or a balsamic reduction
Smoked salmon with dill and horse radish, maybe some blini’s
Chorizo, pan fried then served with pea shoots and a couple of poached quails eggs (or normal eggs if you so desire).
Mackeral, cooked in advance, then served with chilli jam and a peppery salad

Light main:
Sea bass with crispy pancetta and a chilli sweet potato mash
Fillet of beef with wild mushrooms, celeriac puree and maybe a light red wine sauce. Add a potato of your choice (crushed new with a bit of garlic for the win)
Mussels steamed in cider with pancetta and fresh bread (also good as a starter)
Chicken risotto with leeks
Breton chicken (chicken thigh cooked with leeks, mustard, gruyere and cream) served with either pasta or new potatoes and greens
Tartiflette (not even slightly light, but awesome)

Cold pud:
Chocolate mousse, add orange or mint to taste
Home-made shortbread (add some crystallised ginger before baking) with a fruit coulis and vanilla mascarpone (mascarpone cheese, caster sugar, vanilla seeds)
Err, I’m struggling beyond that, pudding not my strong suit.

Monster Munch. But not pickled onion - it's a special occasion!

Restaurants for special occasions are mostly disappointing these days - spend £150+ and get average food and even more average service. Prefer pub grub and we do that a lot

Not serving crisps as a main on date night might be why we are still together after 17 years....

Scallops with Chorizo is winning with Breton chicken as a main a possible

Tartiflette would just remind us of being a chalet host!

Any more for anymore?

If you're up for a bloomin simple choccy mouse then make one using avocados. Yes, avocados.

You'll need a blender or basic food processor + 2 mins. Job done. She'll never know. And it's healthier. We have this once a week.

I've done something very similar to the recipe from spacemonkey above and confirm it is awesome. You can use avacado's to make truffles as well.

tesco's finest, the ones in the black packaging so you know they're special, served with chilled Stella Artois of course & not that 4% muck.

Do you and the good lady like a bit of stilton? If so, I'd opt for a blue cheese sauce over your fillet. Asparageezers are a good accompaniment too.

Why would you buy expensive meat and then disguise the taste?
