MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
My mate started a new business and I offered to do his web site.
Now he wants to pay me (wasn't my motive) as he has a grant for a web site. ££££ 😀 ££££ (bike fund money)
Realistically, (and I know there are a few errors in it that need changing but as its 99% there...), how much would a real web designer charge for this? I bought he domain name for him and am hosting it too but hosting is free.
I reckon it has taken me 36 -42 hours but wasn't exactly counting, spread out over evenings and early mornings at the weekend and it is fr0om a template that cost about £30. It is made up of 15 HTML pages, 2 CSS style files, and a contact form in PHH.

Most of the text existed in PDF documents that he had so I was able to lift a fair bit of the words. The rest I made up being involved in parts of the same industry. He supplied all the pickies and manipulated them. OK some are a bit large so need file size re-sizing to speed things along and that's easily corrected etc so I'm not after too much sarcasm but expect some as this is singletrackworld afterall. 🙂
Erm.. your site appears to be titled: "Untitled Document"
I don't think that will do too well in Google. 😀
Did you provide any SEO or just do the site?
What standards does it conform to (is it valid HTML/CSS? Is it accessible?)
no <title> on the pages... they all say "Untitled document"
Ooh and ditch those plain text mailto links on the contact page before he get harvested by the spam bots!
Just charge a fair hourly rate based on the time taken + 20% for the time you have forgotten about and the additional time he will want to fix site errors.
BTW - where is he based? Interested about the funding aspect - our business is in North Yorkshire and Business Link says there is no funding around at the moment (which usually means we get extra work from clients wanting to spend someone else's money).
a mate does web design and he charges £150 for a basic one page website with hosting (although he gets a really good deal on the hosting)
there isn't much flash or fanciness (but thats a good thing compared to some of the monstrosities i've seen) but all in all a very nice site
places in my area are charging upwards of £1500, it wouldn't be cheeky to ask (although i dont know how much time you spent) upwards to 500
sorry, upwards of[u] 500
Agree with m_f. Work out what you think your time is worth per hour then work backwards from that to account for tax* and the hours spent.
* I'm assuming you are paying tax, as it may be difficult to do "cash in hand" if he has a grant for the work.
D'Oh (about the page titles!) and cheers for pointing numpty errors out....
M-F, he is based in North Wales.
I'll be re-up loading the HTML pages next week so will make the relevant alterations after my mate has proof read and found all my spelling mistakes I can't spot.
Run it through the W3C HTML Validator too.
It doesn't have to be perfect, but right now it has a few rather odd errors that may throw some browsers (like random HTML and DOCTYPE tags scattered through the page)
I might give him a bell I could do with some "Specialist Butt Welding" it was a hard ride last weekend. 😕
