[#2469697]

It's not often I get the opportunity to play with new technology, but I was having a play with one of these this afternoon. Unfortunately it wasn't connected for internet but we played a bit with the video, that was impressive. It's big and quite sexy and also makes calls. It's not often my head is turned by technology but this was quite impressive.
I'm sure the geeks will say mleh! So what?
Wasted opportunity because I didn't understand the technical info...

It will have faults it will frustrate people and it's never going to be used to it's full capacity.

It'll sell really well confuse the hell out of alot of people, then apple will cash in on the next innovation in pointless crud to enable you to value life less.

As a non geek I'd say the Samsung wee wees all over the iPhoney. Apart from the speed of the thing, the screen was actually useable and if you can drag yourself away from the brand, I'd say the Samsung is a cool piece of kit.

I'm a phone geek and that phone looks awesome - my HTC used to bring me happiness ๐Ÿ˜› Now I want an iPhone or the newest HTC. That Samsung does look awesome, they are good at phones, just don't like their menu system.

It's not really happiness that phones bring, not like having the wind blow through your hair bombing down a hill on your bike - I will admit my phone cost more than my bike! HA

But they won't bring you happiness

They can do. They won't turn my life into an endless stream of bliss, but these things can make me happy like a good bike ride or a great day out can.

Samsung and Android. So it'll be broken in some ephemeral way out of the box, it'll never see a software update ever, and Samsung will laugh in your face and wee in your Bombers if you try and get support from them.

Samsung the new Motorola then? Guess you could just root it.

I believe this is dual core.

I think this might be a single core. Could be wrong tho.

Seriously though...if it's a Samsung, I'll never touch it. I've experienced two of their phones in the past. They've both been beyond shite.

No doubt, this is a sexy phoneโ€ฆ but man, what is with 4.3-inch smartphones? These are just too enormous for me to ever consider. Samsung, shrink this bad boy down into a more miniaturized version and Iโ€™ll be happy to consider the switch

bollocks to that - 5 inch screen and I might be interested
updateable with new versions of the operating system without having to wait for the manufacturer to deign to rewrite their own version and I'd have one right away

Not sure I would either. This was a prototype which is being launched this week and I was chuffed, in a childlike way, to be playing with it. The chap who is responsible for testing/playing with the Samsung prototypes has an iPhone for personal use... Figure that one out!

All those moaning about lack of manufacturer supplied OS updates clearly dont have a Sony Ericsson android based phone
(My X10i only got an update from Android 1.6 to 2.1 in November FFS! Its still a nice phone though)

That review falls down on the first line

Samsungโ€™s already responsible for the best all-around Android phone with the Galaxy S

FAIL

Galaxy 2 is a dual core, benchmarks on anandtech for those interested in such things.

it'll never see a software update ever, and Samsung will laugh in your face and wee in your Bombers if you try and get support from them.

True fact. Cougar's obviously seen a copy of the samsung policy document ๐Ÿ˜‰

He'd not be doing his job properly if he didn't know what the competition was like to use day-to-day.

Don simon is in spain, no? Perhaps he was at MWC?

EDIT: mobile world congress, on at the mo in Barcelona.

Tell if you want, with my level of technical knowledge it'll be difficult to prove anything and no-one will believe either you or me....

It was black too, and shiney and looked very nice and had a nice screen...

I feel your pain, bigyinn. Having said that, the boffins at www.xda-developers.com are *this* close to having a fully functional Android 2.3 custom ROM for the X10. Stripped away all the SE crap and apparently it is stupidly fast, even compared to the current latest and greatest smartphones.

I like the galaxy s. Had one for six months now and it is way faster than most phones.

What I don't like about it is the support and this is the part Samsung need to address. Android 2.1 was ok. A lot faster than my old 5800 os but not a patch on the iphone. After a whole day of faffing around trying to get 2.2 to load on to it then things went down hill. Constantly force closing and having to reboot on a daily basis. Samsung do some good hardware but really lack in the support dept. I run a custom rom and the thing flies. I really can't see them sorting this problem out for when the new one comes out.

I would be slightly cautious about purchasing a new Samsung phone until they sort out there software. Sad really as the hardware is second to none imo.

It ain't never gonna be cool

Did the poster mean to type "ever"? That's a double negative mate, or were you trying to sound cool?

People who worry about being cool: Flufy wuffies who get wet pants if they think they will impress all the other fluffy wuffies around them! The sort of closed thinking people who follow the crowd.

Forget cool, when selecting a handset. Aside from having a slick practial UI, ask the questions: "is this right for me". "is it flexible and open to multiple providers", "is it good value", "will it take a memory upgrade".

Android is obliterating Apple because it ticks all these boxes.

Apple stole a march with it's top performing UI, but fails miserably in key areas. What discerning customers want it the UI of an iPhone and the flexibility of Android.

iSheep will always love Apple as they know no better, but meanwhile, the value conscious discerning smart phone user will buy Android handsets.

Smartphones WILL make some people happy, but I know having one would make me miserable.

Touch screens and clumsy fingers are a recipe for frustration.

having seen mates with various different android phone constantly moaning/updating/flashing/ froyo this gingerbread that i'll stick with the hassle free ignorance of an i-phone
