I have just had to return a pair of Merrell Chameleon 3 Ventilator GTX shoes because the Goretex inner had failed. 🙁 Not my previous experience of Merrell
Before I jump in with bare feet and buy a second pair are there any others I should be considering?
I've had a pair of North Face Trail Shoes which have served me very well - i think they Hedgehog Type ones...
Keen targhee are well comfy.
As a matter of fact i'm on my 2nd pair now.
Best shoes of this ilk that I've had have been some Karrimor eVent shoes, I basically wore them to destruction. Extremely comfy, the eVent worked very well, unless water enetered around the ankle they were excellent. Still have them, I keep meaning to look at getting them resoled.
Surf-Mat - How do you find the sizing? Better to group a size?
Also how hard wearing are the soles?
Happily trade a little grip for length of service 🙂 But I know what you mean regarding the Merrell's and wet rock 😯
My Salomon goretex (Exits I think) have been great (£90ish), comfy as slippers and still look pretty new despite over 2 years of abuse. They're now a little bit uncomfortable on the arch of my foot after 4-5 miles so I've bought some Northface Hedgehogs goretex (rrp £90ish but got them for £62 from Nevisport). The Northface aren't quite as comfortable but probably better for 'proper' walking (stiffer sole, more supportive).
Approach type shoes are great for general wear. As comfortable as trainers but waterproof, grippy and much harder wearing .
Another vote for north face hedgehogs. I'm on my 2nd pair, wor lass has had 3 pairs. I can think of atleast another 4 users. Sizing is good
Keen targhee, all day most days. Had shoes and mid highs. Incredibly comfy.
Bought a pair of these and they are the best shoes Ive ever had

Salomon's every time for me, I've got a pair that are now 15 years old and still not falling apart.
I tend to buy a new pair every 5 years or so though for walking etc, I've not used a walking boot in years because the Salomons are so comfy and offer enough support for general walking.

I did the tour du mont blanc in a pair of Salomon XA's and they were way more comfortable than a couple of years previously when I did it wearing a pair of Chris Brasher boots. The Salomons are quite lightweight but still manage to be fairly robust off-road. Fast lace system is great and there's a good distribution of grip across the sole. Also, good protection of the toes with the reinforced front box section. Only reason I didn't get another pair was because I was a bit disappointed with how quickly the sole wore down when I was running on-road and, I felt the heel cushioning was lacking (but that might be down to my style of running).
I've been running on and off-road the last six months in some obscure Nike's and they've been very good on all types of terrain. In the wet weather, I'll combine these with a pair of waterproof socks and they're just fine.

um - that might be because they are an off-road shoe?
Anyhow I would second the Salomons XAs - but they will not be as tough as some mentioned here as they are primarily designed as a running shoe.

couldn't agree more
Northface Hedgehogs wouldn't even last as long as this thread. Amazed people are recommending them.

Seriously tough and comfy. But i suppose with your previous experience you might want to avoid, I've got 2 merrels and they are both rock solid. Tiso have a sale on them as well i think if you are nearby.
Another vote for the Salomon...Decathlon were flogging off Exit GTX shoes for under £60 in the Spring and they have been very good. So much so, I bought another similar pair when they came up on the Classifieds.
Inov8....the less runny of the fell running shoes they do are very good.
In case anyone is after boots, this looks like a bloody good deal!

Caveat - I currently own 4 pairs of Merrells and love them.
I'd take a punt on another pair of Merrells - I've had 7 or 8 pairs of various models over the last few years and never had an issue with build quality or longevity.
Usually wear Chameleons of one variety or another but wanted something more substantial so just got a pair of these which seem to be pretty decent -

Well, seeing as this thread has been resurrected by the now removed spammy comment.... I wear Salomon shoes almost exclusively - I get them half price through working a few shifts a month at the local ski slope.
They're just ace! I usually go for the XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX jobs - they get worn for riding, long daily dog walks, camping, hiking and even knocking about up mountains when it's dry. Grip is phenomenal, the goretex liner lasts very well (like months, rather than weeks) and the fast-lace system is the nutz.
Also got a few pairs of mid-hi quasi-hiking boots (staff issue 😀 ) and they've taken some very serious abuse - still going strong after a year - impressed!
Not sure if I'd pay full price for the GTX trainers (£80-90) but Go Outdoors were selling them for about half that recently...
Last pair of shoes has been a set of la sportiva wild cats, not the most durable of soles, but have survived 18 months of constant use. But they are incredibly comfortable and fit my feet perfectly.
