Hi,

Picked up a used Passat that is missing its nav SD card. Can I buy a used card (AS) off eBay with a newer version (V8 or V9) and just plug it in? Any restrictions?

Pic of the empty box but assume I don’t need V2 card only?

Thanks

Chris

My old Seat had the VW system and the only way to update was to purchase a card from the dealers as they are use once only type software. Seem to remember not bothering as priced around £100

Can you get a image and do a DD copy on to a blank SD card?

I’d be very wary about buying off fleabay, like blank SD cards, there are lots of hookie ones out there. Some may even be stolen anyway, we’ve had SD satnav cards stolen from Nissan Qashqai in our storage area, they’ll almost certainly end up on fleabay.

What era is the car?

I'd take Waze or Google maps and a clip on phone holder over the built in VW one.  Both have voice control too.

It's  not that the VW one is bad BAD but it isn't as good as either of those apps. I certainly wouldn't spend over £100 recommissioning it.

The big advantage we had with the built in was going through Holland and Germany last year as it didn't rely on data/map downloads. With .bigger data plan it wouldn't have been an issue (you know until free roaming gets trashed by the Brexit lot). 😋

(2012 car for reference).

I've got a Skoda but the sat nav and infotainment is basically the same. Once you have a legit SD card you just download updated maps from the website onto the new SD card. Not tried using a normal SD card in it. I'm sure Briskoda or the VW alternative forums will give you a guide if there's a way round it.

I looked into this for my 2011 Passat a while back. VW don't seem to support cars from that far back, pacerc200 's link above is for 2014 on.

Happy to be proven wrong, but as my sat nav seems to think I'm 100m to the right of the road I'm actually on half the time I'm not bothered updating it now!

If its the newest version of the passat I wouldn’t bother, the sat nav is unbelievably crap. I would prefer if it wasn’t there and have the apple play as standard.

Agree with some of the above that the VW sat nav isn't great. It does the job its just not as good as Google maps. If its in the car its sometimes handy but its really not worth paying much for.
