Doing an online check-in for Varigin Atlantic for a flight from Barbados to Manchester (headinghome from work not holiday before you ask...)
It asked me if I'd voulunteer to take an alternative flight or cash or air miles, I guess it's overbooked. I said no, but I know I'm on the cheapest of the cheap tickets so I expect I may get asked again when I check in.
Any Idea what the going rate might be if I say yes? If they bump me anyway it could be up to Euro 600 by the look of it.
Years back some people I met at a wedding used to do it a lot on the way home only from work trips, cash in hand, free night in New York.
I think the rates depended on if you were later or next day.
Stuck my hand up for a delta one but they couldn't get me to my final destination at the time but it was a couple of hundred US for Vancouver to LA
seamans ticket?? (as in one you need to supply your marine tickets to check into) ..... SFA unless things have changed . - Dont ask me how i know 🙁 Oh how i dont miss having to use Seamans tickets - the only advantage i saw for me was i got an extra bag for free - i assume the company got cheap fares.
A guy at work did this between Amsterdam and Glasgow and I think he got £250 and an upgrade for his flight
Ryanair were offering €200 plus hotel, food and drink last year for a flight from Stansted to Edinburgh. Unfortunately I couldn't accept as their first flight of the day wouldn't get me back to Edinburgh in time. Flight had cost me less than £20.
Parents did well from Virgin (economy) many years ago - ISTR free flights anywhere on the Virgin network and to come home via Paris from San Francisco. Maybe cash is better for you though.
I don't think it is a Seamans's ticket, at least it doesn't say so on the boarding pass (Economy Light!), and I've flown the route a few times now and never been asked for my Discharge Book yet.
Seaman's Ticket is also supposed to get you an extra piece of carry-on luggage too...For your sextant in its large wooden carry case!
Was offered 600 quid each and a hotel on the airport site for an overnight delay once for my family of four
Wife said absolutely no as we were meeting her sister and BiL in las vegas once we landed. Told them the story when we met up and neither of them could believe we'd not taken it (for the sake of 1 night in a casinotel)
🙁
Give them a call and push for business class seats on the next flight. Bear in mind that they can still chuck you off even after you check in but only with statutory compensation.
I used to get this a lot when flying to/from the US e.g. LHR-New York often over-sold by 20% to cater for no-shows. Did ask what the deal was a few times, but it was often just vouchers for (more) flights rather than cash. One time I did turn it down for $500 - caught the flight home because I had an important afternoon meeting - flight landed and then because of a terrorist alert, spent 9 hours parked on the runway and missed my meeting!
If your not a frequent flyer make sure you ask for a pass for the business lounge as well (once you’ve agreed on the £££)
Do they still do a seamans ticket... I remember that being bandied about when I was a cadet. Guess ask at the counter and decide but also see if you can get an upgrade etc etc
BA used to do a 06.15 and an 06.30 from gla to LHR daily.
My colleague booked the 6.15 every week and always turned up seconds before the check-in deadline. She got bumped almost every week and made a fortune (business class)
Her day was planned around the 06.30 flight.
I got offered about £150 to get bumped by a couple of hours on s Friday evening on my way home.
Not a chance in hell that was enough to make me stay in London any longer.
In was offered £2500 to move from business to premium economy coming back from Hong Kong on one occasion. I said I'd happily go in the hold for that! Sadly at the gate a few business passengers didn't show so I didn't have to move.
I've had a few bumps offered, and accepted a few. If there's a hint of a downgrade, or a worse seat, however, it gets rejected immediately.
If I have to be home at a certain time, it gets rejected immediately.
If I'm on a relaxed schedule, and get the same (or better!) conditions of carriage, and a few bob for my inconvenience, why not!
Offered up our seats a while back (90's) on JFH to LHR, BA were so grateful we got a couple hundred each and got to turn left on the next flight home. First and only time I've flown first.
happened last night on the last LGW-EDI flight. tanoy request for volunteers to miss the flight, hotel n meals n compensation due to 'operational reasons'.
announcement was (coincidentally) 5 mins after 5 easy jet crew rocked up to the front of the boarding gate and discussions ensued. 4 blokes all travelling together volunteered but were on the flight as we took off - as were the crew. must have been some no shows.
If there’s a hint of a downgrade, or a worse seat, however, it gets rejected immediately.
You'd have turned down 2.5K to go from business to premium economy? I spent an hour in the lounge wrestling with which bike I was going to buy!
I’ve done it a couple of times recently. Dubai to Melb on emirates, I was in full price biz and had a night in a 5* with all good and drink 500 quid and a first class upgrade. Didn’t care as wasn’t in a rush
Avdave, for that even I'd consider flying slum class! 😉
Although, am just back from a long trip where HKG-LHR was the last leg, can't say I'd have taken anything other than the seat I had on the flight I was booked on. Getting home was worth more than anything.
Have had £5-800 for some short haul bumps, but never seen or heard of that much!
