Visual impairment and Windows PC

I know an elderly gentleman and his vison is deteriorating but he wants to continue to use his PC for email etc.

He currently has Win 8 installed and would prefer to continue to use it, as its familiar to him.

I know Windows has a narrator function, any suggestions for software that will allow him to use his PC?

I think he needs more audio output more than magnifying text etc.
