My elderly father came to stay at the weekend, and let's just say that the mattress now needs cleaning. Does anybody have any experience with upholstery spot cleaning equipment? There's a bewildering range of manufacturers available and a wide range of prices. Has anybody used any previously and can give a view or recommendation?

Unless he is staying regularly then rent something. Cheap stuff is normally pretty rubbish either no cleaning properly or doing more damage than the original stain.
Having said that, you can do a lot with a normal vacuum cleaner and a little hand held steamer, which is cheap. Vacuum the mattress, spray fabric spot cleaner (from the supermarket) and rub off the worst bits and then blast it with steam and rub with a microfibre to get the unpleasantness out.

We've used vanish carpet and fabric cleaner with success. Oh and buy a mattress protector for future visits.
We have a Bissell spotclean pro. Works very well when the cats chunder on the carpet. No experience with elderly persons pee, sorry.
I have a spot clean pro and it has been excellent.
it has got make up / calpol out of the carpet and even sorted out an entire tin of shaving foam being emptied under a bed (thanks to my 4 year old)
I also used it to spruce up the car seats which it did well.
i think I paid about £100 for it.
Hire a rug doctor from the supermarket if it’s a big stain? Liquid bio detergent, and any marks will disappear.
