Off to france in a week, wondering how worth it would be to travel over with a dry fuel tank or a full one (outward and return)?

I'd guess french fuel works out cheaper, even fuel from motorway service stations? but is it worth bothering trying to use as much french (or UK) fuel as possible?

Diesel is cheaper over there and petrol is slightly more (€1.55/l for petrol at supermarkets last week and diesel was less but I can't remember by how much). Not sure about motorway fuel prices though.

Was over there recently, motorway service stations were about 1.50 for diesel but much cheaper if you get off the motorway and use a supermarket pump where you pay at the pump, about 1.30 at those.

Just got back from France, Intermarche were cheapest at 1.36/litre and 1.49/l on motorways. There's a Carrefour a mile from Calais ferry terminal, if you want the coordinates let me know

I usually come back to the mainland fairly dry to save a few Euros. This proved problematic when the Seacat thing was slow due to bad weather. I drove to the deserted 24h petrol station but the pump spat out my card. With over 30km to the first motorway sevices there was no point going on so I trickled back to the port resigned to sleeping there. I asked the Seacat man if he could think of a solution and he disappeared below deck with a bucket, returning a few minutes later with 10l of a red liquid for free. Fiats run fine on Seacat fuel.

Cheaper in France, but don't let your tank go too dry, because you don't see as many petrol stations around as you do here.
