Looking for a few days to spend a significant birthday with few friends. Needs to be 2 hours max from Manchester by car/train.

End of this month so weather and daylight hours hopefully not an issue!

Was thinking maybe somewhere like York? Lakes? North Wales or Chester?

Any hidden gems?

Thanks

Not much in Chester. York is better. Liverpool can fill a weekend.
Lakes will be rammed with school hols; best avoided.
Have you thought of Newcastle? Great night life. Easy by train.

Edit...if you are only interested in getting bladdered what about Blackpool. Full of stag parties. And hen parties, nudge nudge!!!

What do you want to do? Leeds is pretty good for food, drink, history and entertainment - as is Sheffield. Liverpool is maybe too close to home and if you’re a manc then you’re probably not interested 😉

York or Durham are obviously a bit smaller but have a lot more history (you can chuck Chester in there too)

I’d be interested to know where you decide!

my stock answer, and if you can stretch to 2.15 on the Transpennine Express, is Durham.

Best little city in the world; bars, proper old pubs (Victoria ftw), restaurants, World Heritage site, riverside walks, and if you need a big neet out 15 mins train ride to Newcastle.

Chester is like a smaller, less classy York. And it smells of wee, at least the walkway around the walls does.

Durham is an amazing place, nice for a romantic weekend away.

Liverpool is friendly, full of great boozers and is packed with stuff to do - and I'm a Manc. 🙂

For a small, bijou, ultimately messy pissup, York cannot be beaten.

London. Two hours by train. So so much to see and do. No matter how many times you've been, there's always new stuff to discover.

Thanks all.York seems a decent shout. Is there much to do aside from drinking and eating? I'm aware of Rail Museum, Jorvik, Walls and Cathedral.

Loddrick has it. As nice as the other places mentioned are you’d be struggling to fill a day let alone 2.

I can't believe no one has stated the obvious.. Blackpool FFS!

Kiss me quick hats, donkey rides, the pleasure beach, penny arcades, booze and heroin. Lots of fun for all.

Conwy. It has an interesting castle and walls, and bridges. Proper mountains not far away. Or those zip lines.

When my grandad won a reasonable amount on the pools in the 50's they moved from their council house in Wythenshawe and bought a house Blackpool, I'm not sure that would still be seen as an upgrade!

I actually rather like it though, maybe because I was born there and still have an attachment to the place. And if it all seems too grim you can get on a tram to Fleetwood and really get the full a fate worse than death experience!

If you are in Fleetwood you can take the ferry to Knott End. You will soon learn that Fleetwood is not the worst place in the world.

The Lakes is not really a city break unless you count Carlisle I suppose. Anyway I suppose MCR is an airport code, so I'd suggest Paris, though that wouldn't be a drive or in the UK, so better in all respects.
