A couple of accounts from GOP and Dem poll watchers. Obvious that GOP was intent in disrupting the process rather than observing it.

and then testing positive for Covid is still news!

Trump claimed he was now probably immune last time. But one of the episodes of TWIV on YT noted that the meds he was on meant he might not have mounted his own immune response, i.e no antibodies and not immune.

It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Maybe this should be in the coronavirus thread.

Has anyone checked on Zulu and Jamba?

Isn't Zulu called 5thElephant these days?

Oh God please say that is true! Was it Zulu (under another username) that did the legendary UFC/MMA thread where he was mates with all these dudes that were earning 300k a year as CEO's but used to routinely break each others bones as they were also MMA badasses?

Yeah the fruity language chant was definately from London 2017, I know because I'm pretty sure I'm one of the people singing it. 🙂

It was worse than that.

They were Taekwondo bad asses who would easily beat any of the professional MMA fighters but didn't bother going pro as they earned too much in their day jobs.

One of the best threads ever.

That donation website is amazing. It's the scammiest looking thing I've ever seen - one last ditch bit of grifting before he's kicked out of office.

Slight derailment but does anybody have a link to this thread. Sounds like it could be a corker.

Love that Cassetteboy mashup! I've had Loser running around my head since things started looking positive for Biden. I cannot wait for all this to be settled, and Biden gets to watch Trump get dragged out of the White House.

The system of results in the states is batshit mental.

Why would you allow each state to have their own systems? Why not a single system for every states of the deadlines and the order of counting.

What sort of ****ed system drip feeds their results out rather than a whole state grand reveal when the job is done? How did they lose control and get to a system where news networks ‘call’ the elections rather than election officials telling the news networks when they are good and ready?

And even if you don’t allow counting until the voting is completed (and I can see some value in that) why would you under resource the counting team so it takes this long? 80hrs and still counting is just too long.

I can help with that one. The USA is a federation of states. There have been views over the years about how tightly bound different States are to each other, but they have always had a degree of independence from each other.

It’s not that different from the different countries in the UK having different legal systems, education systems, health services etc. Something that BoJo and his little Englanders haven’t really appreciated - but that’s another thread.

Federalism is built into their constitutional system. It was designed in the 18th century in reaction to despotic monarchism and the Founding Fathers did not foresee what the 21st century would be like. The Electoral College system is probably one of the smaller problems with it, TBH.

It strikes me that it’s a good tactic to help take some of the heat out of the situation so that maybe the more enthusiastic gun toting trumpets are now a bit more accepting ?

It's not working tho, hes still not backing down

I'm loving that trump is still tweeting out his conspiracy nonsense about illegal votes

OK its tearing legitimacy of US elections to shreds

But its also putting the GOP in a dire position: they know they need to condemn these outright lies, but that's going to really upset his base

This is their problem, it's his base, not theirs. Whatever you might think of John McCain and Mitt Romney, they had enough principles to draw the line at overt racism, but anyone like that who stood up to Trump has been hounded from the Republican Party. Now it's Trump's party, and his base. They all know it and know that crossing him will end their careers.

That Matthew Sheffield Tweetathon is very revealing.

A loud portion of the UK electorate is close behind with that kind of utter incomprehension of journalistic aims. They seem to think that the idea of ‘journalism‘ (‘the meeeedja‘) is to let interviewees speak unchallenged.

So they get this stubborn little nugget in their brains that if one of their political heroes or indeed anyone is ‘taken to task’ by devil’s advocate-type interviewing techniques (or even mild requests for clarification/facts) ...then it’s ‘MEEEDJA BIAS!!! DEFUND! DEFUND!’

This mindset is now being passed down to generation who aren’t necessarily stupid, just misinformed.

Of COURSE the media has a ****ing ‘liberal bias’, especially if you think that fact-checking and devil’s advocacy is ‘liberal’.

Of COURSE the media has a **** ‘liberal bias’ if you think that fact-checking and challenging claims is ‘left-wing’.

That exact point was made at the recent big-tech senate hearing. GOP senators were actually stating it.

It's concerning but not surprising that trump (apparently) knows so little about electoral law and has made no effort to inform himself about it.
Facts - bloody inconvenient; just ignore them.
I'm not aware that Barr has commented yet; has he decided to stay well clear of the current shitshow?
He's usually prepared to ignore his legal training and experience to do trump's bidding.
As for trump's announcement about his lawyers' news conference, let's hope that rudy is leading it.

This is their problem, it’s his base, not theirs.

I'm not totally convinced of that. Republicans who were republican before him voted for him. They'll vote republican after him. He maybe got some people to vote who will go back to not voting. For the most part I think he took what existed and made it noisier.

They either left (i.e. Lincoln Project) or rolled over and purred when he scratched their tummies (Ted Cruz, for example). He owns the Republican Party now. Nobody dares cross him.

An American political commentator was being interviewed on R4 yesterday and said something along the lines of "There's a attitude of 'my grandfather voted X, my father voted X so I'll vote X'"

Anyway back to the count (with both an 'o' and a 'u'!), this is from fivethirtyeight.com.

A little bit of gaming out here. If Biden is winning 70 percent of newly-counted votes in Pennsylvania, it would take around 12,000 new votes to be counted there to get him to an 0.5000 percent lead. (Meaning, not rounding up 0.46 percent to 0.5 percent — a true 0.5 percent.) If he’s winning 75 percent of new votes, it would take around 10,000 votes. And if he’s winning 80 percent of new votes, it would take 8,000 votes or so. Allegheny County alone says they have 20-23,000 mail votes still to tally, so we’re certainly going to get plenty enough votes at some point, although the exact timing is somewhat TBD.

So there's a possibility that Biden will get enough votes that the Republicans can't ask for a recount. The last tally of outstanding ballots to be counted was 90,000 with another 100,000 provisional votes.

This is an interesting talk, covers so many of the faults with the electoral college systems and American politics in general. Many of which also apply to the UK.

That would be Mitch Mcconnell. He's already signaled where the party stands. The knives are already out. They are abanonding him in droves, except for the notable few like Graham.
I don't think he ever owned the RNC. He was just their useful idiot. The GOP have always behaved like a minority party. They exist to block the Dems. not to govern. They are disrupters and he was good at that.
