Here goes. Pretty sure it was on the BBC, probably 2, late nineties. I remember one episode being about New York and hip-hop/CBGB's(punk etc.)/Disco. Bands and artists were interviewed because I remember De La Soul explaining sampling and Beastie Boys being interviewed playing basketball.

Pretty sure the opening credits involved a swimming pool and a telly being thrown in

Any ideas?

Of no help at all, but that credit sequence rings bells. It was right at the end of the credits, and the camera sort of freeze-framed or stuttered as the TV hit the water with a big splash, yes?

After a fair bit of worktime digging, I found it, It was called "Dancing in the Street: a Rock and Roll History"

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dancing-Street-Box-Set-VHS/dp/B00004CWDT

Looks like most of it is online
