We have a ten year old magnolia in the garden that has always been healthy and vigorous.

About 2 month ago we noticed a dead branch. 2 more branches have since died back to the trunk. Can't see anything obvious on the leaves but they look almost like they were scorched. No more branches affected in the last month so we are just keeping am eye on it.

Southampton based if that is relevant.

Has the plant been damaged recently? Try googling 'coral spot' see if the little reddish blebs show up in a month or three. That's the single most likely thing in my Monster Fun Book of Plant Pests and Diseases.

Your magnolia could be suffering with one of the phytopthora fungal infections which affect the roots and shows symtoms in the foliage. There are out breaks in the south west and south coast of england. Google image search for phytopthora and magnolia and there are pictures that may help you with identification. I don't think the prognosis is good for your tree though.
