what the general consideration on cutting a local trail through essentialy waste ground between two housing estates, found a sweet trail through this wooded waste land bit of cutting back the brambles sawing off the odd thin branch or two and the trail will be a sweet ride between 2 housing estates. is it rite to just cut back the undergrowth ????

yeah, get on with it. don't build any wooden structures and it's fair game i reckon.

Subtlety is key.

Do other usergroups ie. pedestrians use it?
Who does it belong to?

A little pruning here and there will probably go unnoticed, start building gap jumps and people will likely start to moan.
Should major tree surgery be required, it's the perfect time to do it what with all these high winds, but do it properly and tidy up afterwards... If you must add obstacles to the route, take a separate line off the main route to add the obstacle.
If you can sort existing trail issues such as erosion, puddles and restrictions properly, you'll probably find people will actually thank you for your efforts.

Although after the recent winds, it took me around two and a half hours to tidy up all the windfall on a mile stretch of local singletrack!

All land is owned by someone, and whilst I may build there, there is a good chance it might be pulled drown / trashed / dug up etc. build, just don't get too attached to the trail....

Sone pruning shouldn't cause any issues, as above don't get too attached, gutting when some kids use all of your massive table top to build some (terrible) 2ft doubles rather than do their own digging.. .

Was when I was mountain boarding rather than biking but feelings are the same !

A rake is one of the best tools you can use too mate, ive built 100's of meters of trail with a rake alone

Any fallen stone walls nearby? A few lengths of soil pipe laid in then cover over with rocks topped off with local trail surfacing and you'll be back on track in no time!
