I show a slight interest but you have to be careful or he will start into the most minute tech detail about them!

Anyway did you go?

There was a tractor fest in Skaer (brittany) when were holidaying a few moons back, seemed an excuse to dress up in overalls, get greasy and then drink and eat all day and night--

No I didn't go, had other stuff that needed attending to. But I will endeavour to find out where others are held so I can incorporate a bike ride.

Yes, it's definitely a blokey thing with male-bonding, get away from wifey etc. I really wanted to talk to the lady tractorist but, blimey, she sure was in the zone!

Most of the time yeah! There are incidents from time to time tho... When we are going full-tilt each plane can spray up to 6,000 acres in a day. Because a John Deere can't work at 110mph 😉

Not a tractor, but a plough, although not a regular plough that you would see attached to the back of a John Deere.

Kuco - you didn't miss much at APF, unless you're a tree climber or like 600+ horse chippers.

"home-made, propelled, log lifting and winching trailer?"
That explains the lack of guard ..
but as previously, that needs a guard on it

The two combines AND header on the low loader was abmitous

"Because a John Deere can't work at 110mph "
Guessing not the UK?
I always wonder how you can switch on/off in the right place and/or follow where you've been, ie so you're not overdosing? Its not like/I guess there are no tramlines for planes or GPS that can 'work' for sprayer-planes?
That and how does the 'draft'/wind effects of a plane effect the evenness of the spray?

"Whats with the relatively tiny hopper thing on the back ?"
For spreading slug pellets
Though normally it'd be used attached to something else doing another job like a sprayer or maybe a seed drill/piece of cultivation eqpt/rollers. Else if on its own, then maybe something with less compaction that a tractor, such as a quad-bike

Here are a few, Ill thin them down a bit by biasing the mishaps:
[img] [/img]
went soft quick

[img] [/img]
something flicked up

[img] [/img]
wet spot

[img] [/img]
another wet spot

[img] [/img]
just poor stacking

Not a tractor, but in my (to be) dining room, a 19th century Thresher. Dad didn't want to throw it out...

My 2 .5yr old son loves tractors. They have to be green or blue though.

We saw two combine harvesters on the road the other day. He flipping loved it!

Nope, I now live in the U.S. in Kansas. A LOT of open space... Pretty much everything out here is agriculture related. I love it! Must get a picture of some of the more conventional tractors to post...

Anyhoo, the spray planes do have GPS. There is a lightbar in front of the pilot that guides left and right to what has been sprayed already. It's a little like a Tron version of the guide lines on a back-up camera screen. There are automatic spray systems that open and close the booms when the plane is lined up, but they are not popular as spraying is so wind dependent that everything is a lot more tactical than that... A good pilot can be accurate within about 2 feet. My father-in-law's party trick is dropping water right up to a person/truck and stopping short right in front of them. It's crazy impressive!
Drift is a huge part of spraying, as it is used to direct spray away from roads, houses and sensitive crops. With the size of some of the fields here winds can be different directions from one end to the other, so it is very complex. Generally we only spray in winds below 12mph and in temperatures below 105ºF (the spray hangs in the air when the ground temp is too high). One of our competitors killed $300,000 of wheat a few years ago when he sprayed when it was too hot and the chemical drifted over half a mile. We have to be extremely careful! I know an awful lot of pilots from racers and stunt pilots to airline pilots and instructors, and they all have huge respect for good crop dusters...

Saw these nice red, shiny McCormicks at Slide Rock near Sedona Arizona & thought of you lot. Apparently they were used in the orchards there a few years ago.

Also found an old front loader cabless digger thing but the sun is behind it so will try and take a snap later.

P.S Sorry for the rubbish phone photos.
