It is all about inferred intent though isn't it McHamish?

I am not offended because I am gay (as I am not gay) I am offended that people think it is acceptable to discuss things in such a manner and think it is acceptable.

I watched it last night McHamish, and I cant recall seeing any bumming, but perhaps I wasnt watching closely enough. 😉
What never ceases to bore my arse off is the standard retort of 'gay police' or 'PC brigade' when anybody objects to offensive comments - listen, and I primarily mean you, stevewhyte, I didnt report your comments, I told you directly what I thought, as I would if I heard you spouting such crap in a pub, etc. It's not about being offended just for the sake of it, there's just no need for attitudes like yours in this day and age. Clear enough for you?

@MF...

I really have no idea what you're talking about.

But thanks for reading between the lines and making wild assumptions about my opinions on homosexuality.

I had no idea gay men were so easily offended.

have you loke at how some famous gay people were tretaed here not so long ago?
Oscar wilde ? Alan Turing
Turing's homosexuality resulted in a criminal prosecution in 1952, when homosexual acts were still illegal in the United Kingdom. He accepted treatment with female hormones (chemical castration) as an alternative to prison. He died in 1954, just over two weeks before his 42nd birthday, from cyanide poisoning. An inquest determined it was suicide; his mother and some others believed his death was accidental. On 10 September 2009, following an Internet campaign, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology on behalf of the British government for the way in which Turing was treated after the war.[5]

The Naked civil servant etc.

it is not that long ago in this country it was illegal to be gay and people got treatment. the age of consent has only very recently been the same for heterosexuals as homosexuals. Thatcher and section 28* - where it could not be "promoted" as equal to heterosexuals etc.
It has been a long way to get to this and still some way to go where no one mentions his sexuality as as it is viewed as unimportant.

*

"promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship".

I really have no idea what you're talking about.

That BS

My post wasn't remotely homophobic in my opinion.

You know nothing of my opinion on homosexuality, and I won't discuss it further.

I'm done with this thread.

I didn't think so either, but one person's banter is another's offensive comment. In the pub, with friends, the distinction is known. On here it is not worth the risk.

I did not know heterosexual men were so sensitive, so easily upset and well so girly and flouncy - obviously my "banter" wont be offending you nor will it say anything about my views.
FWIW I did not think it was homophobic just crass tbh.

I know I should do the sensible thing and just ignore you, but I feel I should perhaps clarify my own position on this, in the vain hope that it might help you realise why your comments are so offensive. As a registered nurse, I have worked with some brilliant, dedicated, witty and bright folk over the years, who just happened to be gay. I am the very proud father of a young man who is honest, helpful, intelligent and everything a parent could wish for. He also just happens to be gay. In both these cases, the 'gay' bit is incedental. People are people, regardless of their sexuality, and just because you struggle to handle the sight of 'two poofs going at it' (your quote, not mine), doesnt make them inferior to you. If I've got this wrong, or misjudged you in any way, dont resort to insults, just try to put over your point in an adult way.

i thought i might lighten the tone of this thread which has unsurprisingly descended from Torchwood into some homophobic/not homophobic bickering.

I actually lived* with Barrowman for a few months last year. I have nothing but nice things to say about the guy, he works extremely hard, is polite to everyone who bothers him (constantly), is a cracking laugh and very down to earth. Considering he's fairly high profile, you'd never know it if you sat down with him for a chat (until of course someone comes over and say "omg it's John Barrowman!").

*we both lived pretty much next door to each other in a hotel while he was filming something and I was on business. Spent a fair bit of time with the guy, there we no other long term guests at that time. And no, I didn't get any knocks on my door in the middle of the night 😀 Well, actually I did, but that's an entirely different story!

barnsleymitch, there are no sides in this argument, just some who took offence to the comments and others who didn't. It happens all the time on here, but to conclude from those comments that someone is homophobic is just wrong in my opinion.

just because you struggle to handle the sight of 'two poofs going at it' (your quote, not mine), doesnt make them inferior to you

Whoever suggested it did?! I missed that sub-text 😯

Sometimes when you defend (alleged) bigotry too hard it can do more harm than good.

The post in question was removed stilltortoise, and perhaps, as I said in my last post, I should have just ignored him with his 'boo-hoo' comments, but you know what? I have every right to respond to offensive posts. Like I said, it's not the 1970's anymore.

Quite right too, I just think that you've drawn some pretty offensive conclusions from what I thought were inoffensive comments. Make an accusation that someone is homophobic on a public forum and expect it to go unchallenged??

Serious question: is "poof" one of those words that only gay men can use to describe themselves, otherwise it is offensive? What is the informal collective (non-offensive) noun anyway?

Surely it's an adjective, and using it as a noun is what makes it offensive?

Eh?
He is poof (ADJ)
He is a poof (noun)

I don't recall ever hearing it as an adjective. "Gay" seems to be used as both adjective and noun tho'

I do like the way we seem to have a body of people offended and then a body of folk offended by people who are offended.

"poof" is not a phrase I would use and is generally not used by the gay people I know to refer to anyone.
homosexual is always ok and gay usually though obviously the later is also used as a derogatory term for effeminate or rubbish.
Gay people can be as offensive as they like and just become offensive as it is hard to believe they are homophobic. One of my mates uses offensive terms for "breeders" to show ho daft these terms are.

lol. You're so right. I'm not offended either way, but came across as offended by trying to claim I was one of the unoffended 😆

I did start on-topic by making genuine comments about Torchwood the television programme 🙂

Nice.

I don't know, hence the question mark. I just thought in the sentence "A gay man" man is the noun and gay the adjective.

But I don't see why it matters as someone's sexuality doesn't have a bearing on anything unless you want to get in a relationship with them?

Stilltortoise - just to clarify your statement "Make an accusation that someone is homophobic on a public forum and expect it to go unchallenged??"
His post read something along the lines of "Not only have we lost formula 1, I am now forced to watch 2 poofs going at it"
A later post which is still on says something about a poof being the wee stool he rests his feet on. Laugh ? - I nearly started.
Silly me, however could I have misconstrued his comments as offensive or homophobic?

Add milionaire, good actor, dancer, singer, actor, film star, generous, charitable etc, and ive never met him.

Being gay is just one more label to stick on him and has no effect on what i or many more think of him, top bloke.
