Right, I don't want to talk about whether or not Top Gear is rubbish/ great, but I am just wondering -

Who pays for all those Kias? Are they given/ loaned/ bought? Same thing with that Bentley they rallied the other week - clearly there's going to be thousands of pounds of damage done, so who foots the bill? Do the car manufacturers just take it as publicity or what?

I've always wondered that too. I'd assume even if they applied new panels and valeted they'd be too mechanically damaged to sell on?

Cz, for the record, I likes TG but that rugby did'nt blow my skirt up...

And who pays for the Kia's, well I guess folk that buy em I suppose via the marketing / pr department....

Hammo was good though..

20 minutes of exposure on a TV show watched worldwide by 350 million - what do you think?

I like top gear but tonight was like watching Kia Tv.

I think the cars used are destined to be crushed anyway. I heard the brand new rangerover test/press cars were all going to be crushed or something mad once finished with and the model was launched officially.

I never understood people who used to write in to the BBC " Points of View" TV show to complain about a TV program when there is choice.

Maybe I should endure watching football on tele so I can complain about spitting or maybe ( if I really wished to endure suffering) watch Eastenders just so I could complain about how depressing it is.

Hang on, I think I will just switch over.

Didn't think tonight's episode was great but still the best hour of telly today!

Car launches will see loads of cars that never get sold as they've been used for test purposes. These may have been those or Kia may well have supplied split new cars for them. Even if tonight cost them 100k in cars that's probably a tiny advertising budget and with the review (seemed to me like a pre-requisite of getting the cars) and the tv time playing rugby I'd say it was money incredibly well spent.

Does Twickenham not get resurfaced regularly anyway? Was probably going to get done for the 6 nations (or something like it) the next day anyway...

Bloody cheap advertising really, why do you think it is that in a hell of a lot of TV programmes the phones and laptops are Apple, hour long adverts that people don't ignore.......like they do with adverts

liked the first half of the Kia test with the low-key cameos, nicely underplayed and managed a level of quirk that has been missing. Studio chat seems to be plunging new depths and going for single entendres (handbrake stuff similar to the tractor routine a week or so ago) and the rugby a rehash of the regularly-done car football.

Surprised how upmarket Kia have gone with pricing (be interesting if they can overcome the badge snobbery) and how flappy the bonnet was on the "mexican lotus" 😯

A fiver less than a focus?? I thought they were relatively cheap cars but with a great warranty..

dunno - if hyundai can manage the jump from terrible to acceptable .... why cant kia ....

I had a 00 hyundai lantra - it cost 9995 OTR and it was the 1.6 si model with the spoiler, mica paint and alloy wheels....

IT WAS TERRIBLE (i didnt buy it)

parents bought it from new - and to be fair to them it did what was asked of it - a cheap run around to get to and from work without costing the earth.

i was given it at 8 years old to replace a rusty old (but reliable) escort- the lantra was a terrible place to be for any length of time - traveled to wales in it - swore id never do that again - the back ache the road noise , the rattling, the interior was just awful to look at and felt like it was going to break when you opened the glove box or put on the hand break.(and im no interior snob - i find a land rover defender a perfectly reasonable place to sit)

put me off em big time.

recently took a lift in an I30 at 70mph down the dual caridgeway- its a perfectly reasonable place to be. certainly nicer than my old golf - which in its self was a relitively comfy place to be.

if kia have upped their game to match the prices then i see no reason not to..... other than its a kia 😉

I love the F1 SIARPC laps, due to the slower speed you can really see the differences in their driving style.

Compared to Vettel's lap, Lewis has a really delicate touch of oversteer on corner entry allowing him to get the car turned in that little bit quicker.

Still no idea where people find the money to pay for cars.

Guess they must have a cheaper mortgage or something.

I really enjoyed last night's Top Gear. I don't watch it to be educated...I don't foresee me buying a new (or nearly new) car in the near future so I'm not fussed about any real road testing. I watch it for a laugh.

Where else could you watch a load of cars tearing up the turf at Twickenham and have a car test for the "Eel and Sodium salesmen" out there...

😀

oh - I thought the handbrake gag was quite amusing. Maybe that says more about my sense of humour than anything, though.

The fact that every single week there is a thread on here about the programme indicates it at least has some last impression on people - when was the last time one of the other "car" programmes was mentioned, other than in context of Top Gear?

oh - and even though the programme is mainly just the three of them fooling around, I would take notice of any actual reviews they do. I would trust what they said. (although I don't think my new car has never even been mentioned)

I wouldn't. Clarkson especially. He used to contradict other people for the sake of it, now he contradicts himself for the sake of it.

Was quite incredible that Clarkson actually spoke some sense saying your better spending your money on a GT86 rather than the much faster, more powerful Astra!

Much as I dislike the stupid bits of the show, seeing racing drivers do their laps is absolutely brilliant. Not only is it a superb display of people being brilliant at what they do, it's also technically interesting as retro83 says.

It was also very interesting to drive the track on GT5 too. Pretty hard since it's a lot of very long straights with corners at the ends which you approach flat out.

Yeah me too.

I bought a brand new (never again) Leon FR for £16,100 five years ago.

They want more money now for a 1.6 Focus. I appreciate there will have been a bit of inflation in the last 5 years but its like the car manufacturers haven't realised there is a recession on

true, they are good, but mostly a bit boring barge in most cases. You are correct that you cant pick up a new R35 GTR for that price but the older R34 GTR you can

^^ I still can't get over quite how ugly those are. Looks like a big fat clumsy hippo flaring its nostrils.

The angles of the new ST are almost sleek in comparison (almost)

[img] [/img]

Though the panel gap between the front bumper and bonnet looks a bit stupid.
