Watching TV last night and noticed quite a few adverts will largely have a white cast with a black face in somewhere. Tbh it's probably the same in tv programmes but I don't watch too much UK produced tv.

I was was black I reckon I'd probably find it a bit patronising to always be represented by having an occasional token representation on screen.

The one specific example I can think of is the carling adverts which for the most were largely 4 white 'friends' in different situations. Then one day the four friends became 5 with the addition of a black person, no donut at the behest of some white middle class executives concerned about the image it sends out.

Surely in this day and age we should be able to see an advert with the reverse situation where the carling ads could be 4 black friends....?

Having said that, I wonder how Chinese or people of Chinese heritage feel, when was the last time they were represented on TV...??

I'm guessing you don't actually get out much - in real life I mean.
What's more, I bet one of white guys is Romanian.
And how come it was all guys? Was one of them wearing pink - and, if so, was it raining?

In an attempt to answer the OP's question.

I'm not defending advertising types, after all mrs deadly makes a good chunk of her living by trying to visualise some of their idea on paper. However, from what you're posting, it seems they're damned if they do and damned if they don't, doesn't it?

Put a black guy in and people are shouting tokenism. Leave the black guy out and people are shouting that the ad isn't representative of the population as a whole. And, hey, in the first place, if you're expecting admen to deliver a representation of our multi-cultural society, you'll probably be left disappointed.

Ads aren't representative of society they are representative of a target market.

That's such a lazy, cheap and tired observation.

Surely in this day and age we should be able to see an advert with the reverse situation where the carling ads could be 4 black friends....?

The most annoying advert that ever exited, the Budweiser 'whatsssuppp' advert, was all black guys wasn't it? And...IIRC, wasn't it the actual 4 guys who greeted each other in that way?

I'm far angrier about the way men are often portrayed as stupid, beer swilling, football loving, useless around the house, minor annoyances in women's otherwise perfect lives. You try showing a stupid looking woman on TV, you'd have an uproar. [1]

[1] I'm not really, I couldn't give a stuff but they are shown in this way.

I liked the Lord Of The Rings movies, but not enjoying the films of The Hobbit quite as much.

Preferred the book tbh.

I see loads of black people in the KFC adverts.

And you don't see many white people in the Aid For Africa etc, adverts.

When was the last time you saw an advert where an Eskimo was portrayed as a high flying exec and not sitting next to a hole in the ice?
Plus, its always a man fishing. ****ing outrageous.
Edit when was the last time you saw someone being useless in an advert that wasn't a white male?

Easily this thread's best comment so far on race and tokenism in advertising.
