What is the key at the top left (below escape, left of 1) actually for?

Has anyone ever pressed it out of anything other than curiosity or to make the "nose" on one of these :¬O ?

It's useful on the forum for creating monospaced text like that.

It gets used a lot in programming too, it's a special type of quote mark in things like Perl.

A better question would be, what's it's shifted variant ¬ for? I don't think I've ever used it. (EDIT - ah, you mentioned that)

the back tick is very handy in several unixy kinds of places.
but most people (M$+Apple) control a computer entirely via the use of a right wrist and index finger (see other thread).
