Right so I have just managed to get my Devolo mains extenders working. No idea why they both stopped but no amount of pressing the WPS would work but having moved a table, chest freezer and got the ID's I can now connect them...

Now roll back 5yrs... the devolo in my bedroom/office was just a temp fix..the only available plug is right next to my bed .. pretty much by my head. It occured to me that's quite close for a WiFi booster and perhaps I should either:
1) Make a tinfoil nightcap
2) Move the plug
3) leave plug but disable Wifi (as its cabled anyway)
4) Other suggestions including stop being paranoid?

If you don't use the Wi-Fi when your asleep you could / should just turn it off. Its a waste otherwise.

Even if you cant prove it will fry your brain, you are wasting a tiny bit of money leaving it on, aren't you ?

I fall asleep usually watching NexFlix or something.
In any case I don't know if it switches off or is just disabled.

Yeah but then I can't see the projector screen (sheet over clothes cupboard 🙂 ) and I dont have a headboard either. Be easier (and more useful) to move the plug to the other end of the bed.

Seriously though anyone think it's worth bothering about.

Just get* one of these. Apparently "the USB stick acts as a carrier for the Quantum Nano Layer technology for the balance and harmonisation of the harmful effects of all forms of imbalanced radiation.

Or this might assist, but expect an impact on signal quality. Ahem.

*don't.

So does anyone have any actual evidence for why sticking your head 5cm from a radio transmitter for 8+ hrs a day for whatever power output a Wifi router has is not potentially harmful?

I have no idea what the output is but I do know it follows the inverse square law and 5cm isn't very far.

Do you have any evidence that it *is* harmful?

A second's check on your favourite search engine will throw up some answers (if you ignore the utter woo claptrap). For example, an overview:

https://www.techrepublic.com/article/wi-fi-is-not-actually-bad-for-your-health-scientists-say/

Or the WHO guidance:

https://www.who.int/teams/environment-climate-change-and-health/radiation-and-health/electromagnetic-fields-and-public-health

Or even Ofcom:

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/manage-your-licence/radiocommunication-licences/mobile-wireless-broadband/exposure-electro-magnetic-fields

I don't think I'm putting it too strongly when I say there is no credible scientific evidence of any risk to human health caused by consumer wireless technologies....

Nope.

You're asking the wrong question. Does anyone have any actual evidence for why sticking your head 5cm from a radio transmitter for 8+ hrs a day for whatever power output a Wifi router has is potentially harmful?

I have no idea what the output is

Stop making shit up then. How do you think "radio" works? You're gonna soil yourself when you discover what radiation the sun is throwing out.

A decent WiFi will dial back the power a bit when not in use.

Also what about all your devices downloading overnight updates, performing cloud backups etc?

Also also... realistically it is pennies.

(Note: you definitely shouldn't turn off your modem/router at night. They don't like that)

Depends where the router is doesn't it. I can give plenty of evidence as to why sticking your head 5cm from a WiFi router mounted to a moving train is potentially dangerous. It wouldn't even need 8 hours.
Admittedly the fact its a router is no more relevant to the potential dangers than it being say an orange, but it *is* potentially dangerous.

(Note: you definitely shouldn’t turn off your modem/router at night. They don’t like that)

They routers, They our Huawei enabled state sponsored lizard overlords gathering data on what time of night you go for a pee or They the bot net admins using your ipad to mine bitcoin overnight?

That's not usually such a concern while you're asleep though

Why not just by a 3m extension lead for about £2 on amazon and then run that to the other other end of your room and then plug your Devolo into that?

Alternatively, just buy a simple timer switch to go into your plug that goes off at midnight?

They routers

Yes, They routers. 🤨 If you keep turning off your router/modem then it will have to renegotiate your line speed every time you turn it on, thus giving you sucky speeds. It may even dial back you maximum achievable speeds due to what it perceives as errors/downtime.

I think it operates on an inverse square law and the sun of a bloody long way away and 5cm isn't.

I wouldn't want to stick my head 2cm from a beta radiation source either... but I keep those on the ceiling.

You’re asking the wrong question. Does anyone have any actual evidence for why sticking your head 5cm from a radio transmitter for 8+ hrs a day for whatever power output a Wifi router has is potentially harmful?

Erm nope... that's 1950's thinking. My Dad worked for BNFL in the late 50's and 60's and the accepted radiation dose halved whilst he was there and is about 1/10th what it is today.

Pop over to Hebden bridge and check on the asbestos safety in the same period and compare to today.

retrospectively 5cm seems to be an unplanned distance from the devolo device.

Both good... I can probably move it to the other set of plugs as well, that way the bed will push right against the wall. They recommend not using extensions but I can swap stuff about to be fair... or just see what happens to the bandwidth... no rush, it's been there 5 yrs... I guess I only started wondering about it because it was malfunctioning.

Is it really 5 cm from your head when you are asleep? If something was 5cm from my head I'd bang my head on it during the night.

I fall asleep usually watching NexFlix or something.

I'd hazard a guess that this probably has more harm than the Wifi.
