Enjoyed episode 1 just now. The critics weren't over positive but they can sod off, I'll make my own judgement.

Just watched episode 1 after reading good reviews.

It’s all a bit ‘Billie Elliot’ isn’t it? And that’s not a good thing. The struggles of the working classes and immigrants as imagined by a middle class person in Islington. No thanks. It’s bloody awful patronising twoddle

The blurb sounded right up my ginnel.

Turned it off after about 20 minutes.

The cast, who are meant to be either Brummie or Irish, all lapse straight into their natural RADA radio 4 english, mid-sentence. It’s comically bad

Lots of complaints from locals about the attempted Brumagem accents

I don't know if this is from more characters coming in - I've only watched episode 1 and the bulk has been with Dante, Bardon, Jeannie, and their Dads (who have clear non Birmingham accents) - and all three of them were specifically cast because they're from the area. OK, Dante's from Dudley and to a pure Brummie the accent is different.

BUT FFS, IT'S A FICTIONAL DRAMA

Seems like just another example of modern culture where we can't ever just say something's good, there has to be something to gripe about.

The standard of TV dramas is generally pretty high. There’s loads of good telly on. When the BBC raises its game above tired cliches and bad accents it can do this kind of thing properly, like it did with Small Axe

This just isn’t very good

It was OK, I suppose. But then I never have high expectations of any primetime BBC drama, always seems forced and unnatural in some way. The thread about another music-driven drama from a similar period, 'The Commitments', made me think about how immediately immersive and naturally dirty all its street scenes and interiors felt from the first moment. It's hard to do well, takes more than the right clothes and decor.

The rubber bricks in the opening riot scene made me giggle though.

We both stayed awake so it must have been OK.

As a born brummie, and someone who likes the music I'm prepared to give it a go.

As a kid with a broad Black Country accent born in the early seventies I recognise the settings and the general air of anger. I have no problem with the accents either, some of my favourite blue nosers have comically bad accents too! UTV

Program itself was OK. Whatever the standard of accents, they're better than those in Peaky Blinders, and don't get me started on the atrocious attempts at Geordie accents by numerous acting folks in various programs. Pretty sure there must be actors in all regions with 'native' linguistic skills?? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Accents are weird, born and bred Bristol but my Brizzle accent authenticity used to get questioned by other Bristolians :-).

I'm still enjoying it.

I'm from Kent so it's all generic northern to me.
