his general principle was to keep the land on his right, except he didn’t realise Sheppey was an Island.

PMSL - that has brightened what has been a crap day so far.

The thing about boats is that the only thing you need to take a boat to sea is enough money to buy the boat - there's no test (at the basic level anyway), no licensing, no mandatory insurance. That means the coastguard get to rescue all sorts of numpties and halfwits who don't have a clue about what they're doing. I've seen people trying to come alongside a quay in their shiny new speedboats without a single strand of rope on board, people about 8 miles offshore trying to wave at passing traffic as their engine was dead and they didn't have a radio (they thought their phone would work)- just check the HMCG incident reports to see what sort of toss these guys have to deal with day in day out, and there's no way they can stop the same fools going out and getting into the same problems again eg. this from Swanage lifeboat's log:

31 Mar: Just before midnight the IRT were paged to assist Portland Coastguard and Swanage Lifeboat with communications after a 42ft yacht declared a Pan Pan off Old Harry Rocks. The IRT arrived just as Swanage Lifeboat came up alongside the yacht 4 miles east of Old Harry, the yacht had suffered engine failure and was towed in Poole. This was the 3rd time the Coastguard had dealt with this yacht in the last 2 two months

He told his rescuers that because he could drive in his car to Southampton using a single tank of fuel, he thought only needed one tank of fuel for the vessel.

**** me that's rather worrying.

What's more worrying is that they had to allow him to try again.....

.....""We passed on relevant safety advice and advised him that the best way to Southampton would be by train. However, he said he would get some fuel and get underway but asked us if he went left or right when he came out of the Swale."

It is unknown whether the man made it to Southampton. " 😆

You think he may have noticed the bridge on the second or third time round, and thought "That looks familier"

My dad used to be in the Coastguard in NZ, he has a standing rant about people in powerboats who are too mean to buy enough fuel. Followed by a rant about how they never make much of a donation to cover the rescue costs.
